Osama being treated by Pak Army
The Times of India ^ | SATURDAY, JULY 24, 2004 12:56:40 PM | CHIDANAND RAJGHATTA

WASHINGTON: Pakistan's intelligence officials knew in advance about the 9/11 attacks, a well-known American analyst has said, based on a ''stunning document'' that he claims was given by a Pakistani source to the 9/11 Commission on the eve of the publication of its report.

The document, from a high-level, but anonymous Pakistani source, also claims that Osama bin Laden has been receiving periodic dialysis in a military hospital in Peshawar, says Arnaud de Borchgrave, editor-at-large of the news agency UPI.

''The imprints of every major act of international Islamist terrorism invariably passes through Pakistan, right from 9/11 - where virtually all the participants had trained, resided or met in, coordinated with, or received funding from or through Pakistan,'' Borchgrave cites the confidential document as saying.

But one does not have to go to Borchgrave's unnamed sources to find Pakistan’s involvement in terrorist activity leading to 9/11. The 9/11 commission report itself nails Pakistan in chapter after chapter, revealing that the Pakistani intelligence was in cahoots with the Taliban and al Qaeda, far more than Iran and Iraq ever were.

Among the inquiry commission's observations, quoted verbatim here

* ''Pak[istan's] intel[ligence service] is in bed with bin Laden and would warn him that the United States was getting ready for a bombing campaign'' – quoting Richard Clarke

* ''Islamabad was behaving like a rogue state in two areas – backing Taliban/bin Laden terror and provoking war with India'' - quoting NSC Bruce Riedel

* Pakistani intelligence officers reportedly introduced bin Laden to Taliban leaders in Kandahar -Commission's own observation.

* Pakistan's military intelligence service, known as the ISID (Inter-Services Intelligence Directorate), was the Taliban's primary patron - Commission's observation

* Pakistan helped nurture the Taliban. The Pakistani army and intelligence services, especially below the top ranks, have long been ambivalent about confronting Islamist extremists. Many in the government have sympathized with or provided support to the extremists - Commission's observation.

I have no trouble believing this article. However, I think we should also remember that to India, Pakistan is the greatest immediate threat. That is not to say that I disagree with anything in this article. However, I don't think it should be used to downplay the importance of Iraq in our overall anti-terror strategy.

The mass US media feeds us pablum, and seldom discusses the overall world situation. Thank God for the net. Iran has gotten very nervous lately, which indicates to me that they suspect something is coming. Despite President Bush's pronouncements that the war would take many years, beyond even both his terms, I still think many people believe it will be over in time for the Super Bowl. If we re-elect W, Pakistan will reform or undergo regime change. However, there's more than one mission in a war.

Searching around Yahoo I found this:

http://www.benadorassociates.com/borchgrave.php

Looks like he is still very active. Doesn't say it on the above site but on another it said he had seven (7) tours in Vietnam.

Fine, just keep him alive and comfortable until, oh, say about October 20th.

BULL. Pakistan is our ally, and Mush our trusted valiant friend. Bush said so.

Smacks of Indjan propaganda.

Plus, isn't DeBorchgrave a French name?

That seems pretty darn unlikely to me. Al-Qaida has attempted to assassinate Musharraf at least three times in the past 12 months, the army has conducted several major military operations to oust terrorists, and the military has every reason to want bin Laden's head on a platter.

Except the ISI was a big backer of the Taliban and buds with Osama. They have conducted operations, but funny thing the big fish always get away.

I have no problem believing that a faction , if not a big chunck of the military and ISI is working against us here. Wheels within wheels within wheels....

The Indian and Paki papers are always at each others throats... take this with a grain of salt... that being said, it wouldn't surprise me...

I take anything in an Indian paper printed about Pakistan with a whole shaker of salt. They have proved that this is not an area of objective reporting.

A spokesman for the Pakistan embassy here denied that Osama had ever been treated "in any military hospital anywhere in Pakistan".

Look how he parses it.."in any military hospital .....how about a regular hospital.

Musharraf is working to correct these deficiencies. He is doing an amazing job under horrible circumstances.

The pre-9/11 Pakistan was an active supporter of terrorism. The Taliban was their creation, and Pakistan knew that the Taliban harbored al-Qaida.

While it's less clear that Pakistan actively sponsored al-Qaida, it certainly wouldn't surprise me if they tolerated it and gave medical attention to Osama at a non-military hospital during that period.

Osama has enough money to buy and equip his own field hospital anywhere he wants. I can't imagine he's dumb enough to seek treatment at a legitimate hospital in Pakistan today. A $50 million bounty on your head would make anyone nervous.

I was a researcher for Arnaud when I was in college. Been to his house. He was a staunch cold warrior, shouting about Soviet disinformation campaigns and other activities below the surface that most people don't notice while going about their daily lives. He landed at the Washington Times after the mainstream media wouldn't have him anymore, and now he's doing UPI, last I checked.

The name is French, but so is Cheney (DuChesne) and Delay. We do a good job of putting backbone in French pansies when they move here.

There are still factions in the Paki military who are involved with AQ to this day. Something else to keep in mind.....the Pakis just arrested two doctors for aiding the Al Qaeda terror network inside Pakistan.

That's all the more reason why we have to support Musharraf in the crackdown in his own country. Remarkable progress has already been made in the past three years.

Far more must be done. But it never was possible to reform that basketcase of a country overnight. 20 years at the earliest might be optimistic. But at least it's headed the right direction.

The report also says that "according to a senior tribal leader in Peshawar, bin Laden, who suffers from renal deficiency, has been periodically undergoing dialysis in a Peshawar military hospital with the knowledge and approval of ISI if not of Gen. Pervez Musharraf himself."

The same source, though not in the report, speculated Musharraf may be planning to turn over bin Laden to President Bush in time to clinch his reelection bid in November.

What a bunch of BS. The President of Pakistan would actively hide bin Laden from us, keep him alive, but turn him over before the election to help Bush win.

Anyone else see a logical disconnect from this anonymous Pakistani source?
