Apparently hoping to outdo Hillary Clinton's improbable attempt to reinvent herself as a duck hunter, John Kerry has tried to avoid alienating supporters of gun rights by depicting himself as a deer hunter. Mark Steyn will have none of it.
Steyn wrote in the London Telegraph yesterday: "He was in Wisconsin the other day, pretending to be a regular guy, and was asked what kind of hunting he preferred. 'I'd have to say deer,' said the senator. 'I go out with my trusty 12-gauge double-barrel, crawl around on my stomach ... That's hunting.'
"This caused huge hilarity among my New Hampshire neighbours. None of us has ever heard of anybody deer hunting by crawling around on his stomach, even in Massachusetts. The trick is to blend in with the woods and, given that John Kerry already looks like a forlorn tree in late fall, it's hard to see why he'd give up his natural advantage in order to hunt horizontally.

What is remarkable about that. I have my fathers browning-patent remington that put the limit in the freezer every year for decades.
"Even more remarkable is that Kerry hunts deer with a shotgun."
For those of us in southern Michigan, that's the only part that makes any sense.
I remember crawling on my belly one day when a 'hunter' decided my turkey call was a little too realistic.
Pretty funny. I agree. Not too many folks here understand much about firearms. To further your point, sharpen your spear or roll out the catapult, lock and load with number -000 rocks. Make sure you'v got the elevation right first, since the trajectory is not all that good.
western NY is shotgun only - I use a rem1100 12 ga 2 3/4" rifled slugs
The only odd thing would be seeing a side by side or O/U used in this manner -
........and then the crawling thing is all wrong - unless its boiler maker night / chili night or the last night of hunting (after last call)
Shotguns only in Iowa, Carl.
I find the trebuchet more sporting.
Posts 20 & 21 are blank. Is this the new way of deleting posters comments?
What is the logic of disallowing some rifles, but allowing a slug? Aren't slugs just as deadly or moreso than rifle rounds? I've been told that the sabot slugs will go through an engine block.
LOL! Not quite as accurate, but one hell of a way of making pressed venison burgers.
Well, here in NC, folks have been using shotguns for deer hunting for many moons, including myself. Best choice if you are on a deer drive or in thick brush, like a lot of areas down east. 00 buck shot was always my preferred shot, but I have noticed a lot of manufacturers marketing shotguns exclusively for deer hunting that fire slugs.
Now, crawling on your stomach to hunt deer makes about as much sense as going duck hunting in a clown suit! Actually, for Kerry, that would probably fit, but I digress....
I know people who prefer to deer hunt from blinds or on the ground, but none would "crawl" anywhere to hunt deer, as deer can hear and see you long before you ever see them.
Kerry is an intercoursing (cleaned up for the benefit of the rules!) idiot pandering to a group he has almost NO chance of swaying, especially those who have actually hunted.
Hopefully the deer will get the jump on scary kerry and put a little hornshot in him. Bush/Cheney 2004
I've got a Marlin 12 ga. rifled barrel slug gun. So far i've only used it to blow up toilets and sinks shot with 3" magnum shells at at a friend's range.
I've never distance shot the thing but from what I've read it'll drop 6" over 100 yards and hit with enough impact to drop its target.
I am lucky and have access to a lot of good private land. I never hunt on public land. Too many idiots like you described that don't know diddly.
Rule number 1. If you can't see what it is, don't point your gun at it.
well.... snakes do crawl on their belly.
All my friends and my hunter brother uses a shotgun because HP rifles' ranges are simply too dangerous for use in populous flatlands.
If you wanna talk huntin', come hang out at my site
