WHEELING, W.Va. - Like the successful Democratic road show of Bill Clinton and Al Gore rolling out of the party's New York convention in 1992, John Kerry and John Edwards hit the highways together last weekend directly out of Boston, hoping to find the same winning chemistry.
Traveling by bus through the key swing states of Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Ohio before splitting up, the Democratic running mates sought to emulate the camaraderie that marked the Clinton-Gore motorcade a dozen years ago.
Despite much backslapping, hugging and words of mutual admiration among Mr. Kerry, Mr. Edwards and their accompanying families, with actor Ben Affleck thrown in, the rollout did not quite achieve the level of euphoria of the Clinton-Gore political meal on wheels.

I would go see them. I'd probably get a riot started with their 2 supporters here in Alabama.
They wouldn't do that. They are in touch with the little guy.
At a large rally at the Pennsylvania Capitol in Harrisburg the other night, for example, Mr. Kerry blurted: "John and I are humbled to be with Ben Affleck," an Academy Award winner many years their junior, while "John and I are honored just to be nominated."
Mr. Kerry and Mr. Edwards, individually, tried to engage the crowds by chronicling failures of the junior Bush administration and then encouraging them to join in forced chants - Mr. Edwards calling out "Hope is on the way!" and Mr. Kerry modifying it to "Help is on the way!" Neither pitch seemed to much energize the crowds.
HeeHee.
Finally, in 1992, the nominees' wives, Hillary Rodham Clinton and Tipper Gore, struck a responsive chord with Democratic listeners as a pair of attractive, smart women. Teresa Heinz Kerry and Elizabeth Edwards got warm receptions too, although Mr. Kerry's wife came off a bit quirky at times with her unusual accent and a tendency to ramble.
Ahh, Jules, you are too kind.

I notice the media is reporting turn outs in large numbers. I think it was the first day after the convention when it was reported that 20,000 people came to hear them speak. I was wondering if the numbers where true (which I doubt) or if their audience was made of of paid union workers and the NEA in particular.
Mornin' Ella,
Didn't Kerry and Edwards "borrow" most of their "Hope is on the way" slogan from Bush/Cheney in the first place? Now Kerry is actually using the exact same phrasing from the 2000 campaign - "Help is on the way!" It appears that Kerry can't conceive an original thought. That explains why the few proposals he's shared for the future of America seem to be reiterations of Bush Administration policies already in place.
"... HELP IS ON THE WAY!" :)
Great Song, it says it all!!
Thanks. But it's stuck in my head now.
Over the weekend, a FReeper wrote that Edwards and wife did a 'front porch' greeting thing somewhere in Florida (IIRC). The FReeporter said that only about 8 people total bothered to 'visit' the VP candidate and ask questions. The 'porcher' was a failure.
Mornin' Quilla.
Yes indeed. Edwards tries to do a Cheney riff with "Hope is on the way" then Kerry does a flatfoot with outright plagiarism using "Help is on the way."
If either one of them had used Cheney's "The wheel has turned. It is time, it is time for them to go," I would have jumped right through my TV screen and throttled them.
Kerry's me-tooism just proves again how personal the dems' hatred of President Bush is. If they truly hated his policies, as they claim, they wouldn't want their guy using them.
Instead, they want to dump our president because they hold a grudge.
Busing in crowds is standard procedure for the dems, as is paying someone to round up people off the street to make the crowds bigger. This would explain the lack of energy at these rallies. Many of the attendees aren't there because they are rabid dems. They are there because the union bosses told them to be there, or someone gave them a free meal, a pack of cigarettes, or a few bucks to buy some drugs.
