In honor of places that we know we could eat without being interupted by Kerry... Please post your favorite BBQ joint, where it is and what your favorite thing is at that place...

LMAO! Here I'm reading NCSteve's post and I'm thinking -- man, we've got some real common ground here. And then he goes and blows it by mentioning that godawful concoction of pig meat and ketchup from Lexington.

OK folks, there's been about umpteeneleven dozen barbecue cook offs and Eastern North Carolina ALWAYS wins -- as God intended. Now the beef stuff that Texans and KC does is really good eating, but barbecue was invented and perfected in eastern North Carolina. I know, I know, all you other folks, your feelings may be terribly hurt, even shattered, but that's just the way it is. Enjoy your beef and boast of it proudly -- but never, ever mix ketchup and pork -- that's just wrong.

Well lemme see heahhh ... (in my best George "Kingfish" Stevens voice, from TV version "Amos 'n Andy")

With all due respect given to Carolina & Texas style Bar-B-Q, you both know deep down in your heart (or belly) that the very best Bar-B-Q in the entire world is pork and it's slow cooked over hickory coals in Memphis, TN.

That 'bout covers it.

We all know it comes down to personal taste, with a big influence coming from whatever style BBQ you ate while growing up.

My favorite is hickory smoked pork shoulder, pulled or chopped, on a large hamburger bun, with rightly seasoned tomato based sauce poured over the meat, then a right thin layer of chopped cole slaw. A properly packed large bun can weigh 1/3 to 1/2 lb. Of course, there's always fries, potato chips, potato salad, baked beans, those little loaves of fresh baked bread, and countless other side dishes. They ain't called 'side' dishes for nothin', ya know. The BBQ sandwich comes first and is the most important to me.

Then there's hickory smoked pork ribs, wet or dry. I prefer dry rubbed ribs, with sauce on the side. I'll eat either one though. Side dishes are the same as the BBQ sandwiches.

My favorite places to eat BBQ sandwiches:
Three Little Pigs Bar-B-Q
5145 Quince Rd.

Tops Bar-B-Q
Corner of Quince & Getwell (adjacent to the old VA Hospital on Getwell Rd. & Park Ave.)Others 'Tops' just aren't the same.

My favorite places to eat BBQ Ribs:
Gridley's Bar-B-Q
6842 Stage Rd.

Pig-N-Whistle Barbecue Restaurant
2740 Bartlett Rd.

 

There's a lot of BBQ places in Memphis. I've had Ralph Neely's Interstate, Corky's, Rendezvous, Boss Hog, and the old Leonard's BBQ .....

They're all good, at the very least. None can compare to the pork smoked out behind the Eagle's Nest, by me. LOL !! It's true !!

Have you ever eaten at the Whole Hog in Little Rock? Dixie Pig in North Little Rock is good too And Bubba's in Eureka Springs isn't half bad. It's a little different style, but good nonetheless.

"For chain barbeque restaurants, Sonny's is consistently good."

We had Sonny's in Somerset, Kentucky. I thought it was awful.

Let me give you a little advice. Barbecue is almost a religion on FR and these threads are a staple. They are not for the faint of heart, either. The food fights can compete with some of the best political flame wars. There is even a barbecue ping list. Now grab a pig sandwich and some sweet tea and watch the games. You might even get a few ideas from some of these Texans on new uses for squirrels.

Hey Sweet!

You know I've eaten at WHole Hog - it's good.

I have heard that the Dixie Pig is good, but haven't tried it myself.

Bubba's in Eureka is up near the top of my list as well - but haven't eaten there in 12 years. It was GREAT when I last ate there!

Guess this would be a lousy time to post my vindaloo curry recipe, huh?

Now grab a pig sandwich and some sweet tea and watch the games.

I'll have to pass on the sweet tea (my body doesn't work and play well with sugar), but throw in some of the pink stuff and you've got a deal.

The "pink stuff". An utterly inadequate substitute for sugar, but it beats insulin shots. I've gotten used to its uniquely petrochemical taste.

I have a better one though. It's of the alley including three very LARGE dumpsters you walk by. If we hadn't been given directions I would have never found the place!

Ooohhh. I can't handle the aftertaste. I use equal. Yeah, I know. It's supposed to be bad, too. Maybe I'll try Splenda. I've heard mixed reviews.
