Group says Jesus Christ would vote Democrat

By Associated Press

AUSTIN, Texas -- Just a few miles from George W. Bush's former office at the state Capitol, a panel of religious experts weighed a question with relevance to many people of faith: How would Jesus vote?

It's a complex topic that can't be boiled down to simple political terms, said religious leaders who attended a Texas Faith Network conference in Austin on Tuesday.

James C. Moore, renowned anti-Bush co-author of "Bush's Brain: How Karl Rove Made George Bush Presidential," drew laughter and applause when he offered his view to the moderate to liberal crowd of about 250 clergy and lay leaders.

"If ever there were a bleeding-heart liberal, it was Jesus Christ," Moore said at Congregation Agudas Achim synagogue. "I think the carpenter from Galilee was the original Democrat."

Many at the conference voiced concerns that the religious right dominates discussions of faith and morality in politics. They complained that issues such as abortion and gay marriage seem to take priority over hunger, corporate crime and even the war in Iraq.

Some research has found that white Christians who attend worship services at least once a week are far more likely to vote Republican, while less frequent worshippers and those who are not religious tend to lean Democratic. Many analysts have criticized Democrats for failing to more effectively reach religious voters.

"The sound bites and the headlines have co-opted people of faith," said the Rev. Tom Heger, pastor of St. John's Presbyterian Church in Manchaca, south of Austin. "It would be a surprise to a lot of folks to discover that there are some very faithful, regular church attendees who aren't going to vote for Bush."

Conservative pastors such as Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson "would have us believe that morality is all about where you stand on abortion, how you treat homosexuals. I think that is simply wrong," said John D. Moyers, senior fellow at the Washington-based Center for American Progress.

This must be the same bunch that published The Flat Earth. Harmless enough group, as long as they are not allowed near sharp tools...

Following in Jesse Jackson's footsteps?

There's no shame in being liberal (Gypsy Jackson says Jesus was a liberal)

Sounds like a great argument for Jews to be Republicans.

This must be those that Christ speaks of that come in his name, and HE tells them to get away from HIM that HE never knew them.

For what it's worth, Jesus probably would have appreciated some of the ideas of classic liberalism. Unfortunately, today's Democrat party seems more interested in moral license than any of the tenets of classic liberalism. IMHO "compassionate conservatism" is classic liberalism dressed in sheep's clothing.

Shalom.

I think Jesus would be spending time with the Dems. He thought it very important to spend his time trying to reach the sinners.

Just certain episcopalian churches.

By golly they are right! Last election, Jesus Christ voted democrat in Chicago six times, three in Milwaukee for the free cigarettes, punched a stack of six hundred cards in Palm Beach County leaving only seventeen pregnant chads, four times in Philadelphia, and personally cast votes on behalf of Paul Wellstone.

In the off election season Christ has been encouraging Mary-Jo Kopechne to switch party affiliation but has been unable to bring her over to the dark side.

I've also seen people at gay pride with shirts that say "God is gay".

There are a lot of sins in this world of which G-d is pretty tolerant. Habakkuk is a book about a prophet wondering when G-d is going to get down to cases and judge sin.

But I have to wonder how long He will tolerate such egregious blasphemy.

G-d isn't sexual at all. That's why G-d is able to tell us how to place sex in its rightful place in our lives. He created sex. He created us. He knows the appropriate ways for the two go together.

And homosexuality is not one of the ways.

Shalom.

Just like the attempt to PERVERT the word marriage on this day, the liberals have successfully PERVERTED that word liberal. Clinton's description "depending on the meaning of the WORD "IS", was quite instructive to the bent liberal mind.

However, what is totally ignored by this bunch is that Christ will return with a "SWORD" double edged, cuts both ways, for a harvest, now that is not a "liberal" idea.

Jesus doesn't vote. He's a monarchist.

As a Buddhist I have no dog in this fight but I guess they think Jesus would support Osterizing babies in the womb.

Actually, Jesus uses a separate system than we do. He is KING! His vote is the one that counts. All this discussion just shows the mindless pablum that Christians believe today. We have never had a LORD, so we don't understand sovereignty. There will be no vote, no discussion, no excuses, when kneeling before Him. Even the baby killers and sodomites will confess He is King! There is no appeal in His system. There is but one Supreme Judge and 2 possible verdicts.

The Lord will not be mocked!

I like your tagline. However, I think Hell is what man made of Heaven when G-d let man run it his way.

Careful, JMT. It was Christianity that started the argument over what the definition of "is" is.

"This is my body, given for you..." (emphasis mine)

Shalom.

Jesus isn't even a US citizen. This is such a ridiculous exercise, but thanks for posting it for laughter and discussion.

I don't think Jesus would vote at all, in fact there would be no need to, since when he returns it will be the end of the world anyway (if you believe that).

There will be no vote, no discussion, no excuses, when kneeling before Him.

IMHO we won't even be able to open our mouths. If we can, we will be like Isaiah crying: "Woe is me, for I have seen the LORD, and I am a man of unclean lips."

Shalom.

After the meeting, members departed to a nearby theater to smoke the chronic and watch a "Hippie Jesus" movie marathon, featuring Jesus Christ Superstar and The Last Temptation of Christ.
