"I thought the Minoans on Crete had the first toilets"? That was claimed of course, but Evans wanted the Minoans to be just like Victorians. Wunderlich (a geologist I think) claims that the "toilets" were actually facilities for embalming (the drains got rid of the blood etc) and that the palaces were actually mortuaries and mausoleums for the upper crust of that time, analogous to the Egyptian practices.
