I betcha right now that Dan Rather is going to say the White House is his unimpeachable source (because they didn't disprove the forgeries supposedly from some dead guy's secret files).
And I also betcha right now that Burkett was the motivator of this whole story (with a likely assist from the DNC - their whole 'fortunate son' non-sense dovetailed just way too conveniently with this story) and Rather went to Texas to confront him directly.
Evidently he didn't like the answers he got.

CBS stands firm on the grounds that the information was provided by an unimpeachable mental patient.

No, I don't think it will be Rather. After reading the Washington Post article it seems like it will be Mary Mapes who gets thrown off the train. They seem to be putting full responsibility on Mapes, not only for researching the story for the past five years, but for vetting the documents with experts.
The Peter Arnett "I only read the news" defense for Dan. It didn't work very well for Peter.

"We are confident about the chain of custody; we're confident in how we secured the documents."
This is almost heart stopping funny. Kinko's is the choice of secure custody for people with secrets to keep. Oh man, what twits.
What is really funny about all of this. When Rather was first busted for the fakes...He exhibited what Bernie Goldberg wrote about in "Arrogance". That he and the media lib elites at Blackrock were far more intelligent than the rest of us...and we should never question them.
YET IT WAS THOSE ELITES WHO USED A FORGED COPY FAXED FROM A KINKOS IN ABILENE.
Looks like "WE THE PEOPLE"...have way more intelligence than the lib media elitists.

Mary Mapes, you was had! No she wasn't .. most everyone knows Burkett is a nut case .. him and Marty Heldt have been after Bush for years .. so (imo) someone else backed up these documents, someone that Dan trusts .. or they had them sent to Burkett to be passed on to CBS

Yep. I knew it was coming after I saw NYT lay the groundwork for the Burkett sacrifice a few days ago. I was one of the posters who wasn't "oohing and aahing" over the fact that NYT implicated Burkett.
The NYT never moves without permission from the DNC.
I would not be surprised if the DNC coordinated this with CBS News and rest of the MSM.
Burkett is the "lone nut."

"Rather should distance himself from the story, and now here's this." Can't believe CBS would think that was going to fly. Bad legal advice, or none at all. They just contaminated a 'witness.'

I'm guessing Robin Rather gave ole Dan her ok after her buddy from the Travis county RAT party (and Burkett's lawyer), David Van Os, said he would vouch for them. Speaking of Van Os, I'd bet a dollar to a donut that he's the one who hooked Burkett up with saint Max Cleelands' cell # for that little call.

Rather will redeem himself by proving with geometric logic that young Lt. Bush had a key which allowed him to steal a quart of strawberries from the officers' mess.
