Homestate Crowd Walks Out on Edwards
NewsMax ^ | 9/27/04 | Carl Limbacher

Half the audience who showed up last week to see John Edwards' first South Carolina appearance since he won his home state's primary in February walked out before he arrived - two hours late. And in another sign of trouble in paradise, the state's Democratic Senate candidate - whose campaign the Edwards visit was supposed to boost - declined to be seen on the same stage with him. Democrat U.S. Senate hopeful Inez Tenenbaum "has gone to great lengths to distance herself from the national party," reports the South Carolina newspaper, The State. Edwards "is about as close as she’s going to allow herself to get to the national party," the paper reports. The State noted, however, "Tenenbaum didn’t appear on the platform with him" at either the rally or a fund-raiser scheduled for later that day. Aides said she would have skipped the event altogether if John Kerry had been the guest of honor.

It didn't help that Edwards kept the crowd at Columbia's Martin Luther King Jr. Park waiting so long. As they sat for two hours in the sweltering heat inside the community center, Democratic officials were observed checking their watches and looking irritated. When State Party chairman Joe Erwin opened the door to let some air in, people began to get up and leave.

"The hall was about half-full by the time Edwards arrived," the State reported.

Edwards won't win his home state. This is no surprise. However, if the situation were reversed where the Republican candidate for VP was about to be trounced in his home state, the media would be all over it like a second date.

People like this should not be allowed anywhere near the oval office. I know people who are like this- late all of the time. They tend to be scatter brained. Either that or they just don't care about other people's time.

Is that lady underneath his elbow (With glasses and brown hair, behind the guy with the pink shirt) asleep???

Maybe he could continue this trend and not show up for the Vice Presidential debates...

I'd say he maybe ended up with a couple hundred people. The community center may only hold 6 or 7 hundred. Now this is a town where the university has a hugh gym for basketball that probably holds 5-10 thousand. Bush would need to use the football stadium which holds 50,000. They also have a large theater building that holds maybe 3000. Guess they couldn't fill anythin more than a small community center.

Edwards is done in politics.
Let him go back to ambulance-chasing.

Recall Edwards is the man who sees "two Americas".
He talks about his humble start but neglects to mention his $24 million earned in medical malpractise suits over the past three years. Imagine that?

He started out in one America and now lives comfortably in the other. No wonder he sees "double." And don't forget while on the subject of money, John and Theresa paid only 12% income tax. 12%!!!! But we can't see their returns, sorry.

We sure have a pair of democrat patriots running for the two highest offices now don't we?

President Bush came to Pittsburgh six weeks ago, and his appearance ran approximately two hours late...but people stayed and waited.

Edwards probably delayed his appearance in the hopes that half the crowd would faint from the heat so he could pass out his business cards.

Thanks for the post and all the info fellow Freepers are sharing. I am teaching a current events unit to my classes. I've got a class of 8th graders, some who are oblivious to accurate information about our President and his...er..um..challenger. Some, not all, believe Kerry is the man. At this age, it's the "small" details that really bug the kids. I'll have to share the details when they swear what a wonderful candidate Kerry is. Thanks again:)

Maybe they should have promised coupons for free drinks or free cigarettes to those who stayed for Edwards' arrival. Where is their sense of history? Free cigarettes won the state of Wisconsin for Gore in 2000.

Didn't Kerry go to South Carolina for a photo op at an aircraft carrier to start his campaign for the nomination?

These elitest snobs don't even have the courtesy to treat people like humans. If this was the first time the Dim candidates ran late they could apologize and explain but I understand that this happens all the time.

I went to a Bush rallly and he was EARLY!

What amazes me is this:

Kerry/Edwarsds will not win South Carolina. It's just not gonna happen. Why is he even wasting the time and energy there?

He's not there to help Inez Tenenbaum. She's trying to separate herself from Kerry/Edwards.

This strikes me as a total waste of time and money.
