Tornado Rips Through Northern Delaware
NEW CASTLE COUNTY- We are getting more of an idea of how much damage a tornado did to a Delaware airport.
The twister ripped through the New Castle County airport just after 4 this afternoon.
The Delaware Air National Guard says 5 of its giant C-130 cargo planes were damaged. One was actually tipped over on its wing.
DENREC reports 15 thousand gallons of aviation fuel spilled out.
The airport terminal was also damaged.
Despite all that, there are no reports of major injuries.

Delaware Online has a story about it, but copyright restrictions forbid me from posting it.
Howdy from tornado alley! Do you get many twisters up there?
You hear about this?
Not at all! It's pretty rare.
I just talked to our son in New Castle County...the weather was really rough..there was indeed, a tornado at 4:15PM. Alot of damage at the airport. http;//www.delawareonline.com

Sure did and posted it Here about 10 minutes ago!!!!!!!!!
Scary.
Twisters are fairly rare in Delaware - and even more rare this far north in the state.
Granted, the state is only 100 miles from north to south, but the lower half is where they more often turn up, and even those are rare.
Well this one was a result of Jeanne.
Do you have a tornado season?
We don't really have a tornado season, though from my knowledge, they typically form in the late summer in this region.
I work approx. 1.5 miles from where the tornado touched down. Obviously it was extremely violent with the wind/rain earlier this evening. We did hear about a tornado warning (highest threat level) prior to the tornado hitting.
The Delaware Air National Guard normally has 2 - 4 C130's on their flight line. They are very active making runs to the Iraq/Afghanistan. Great folks doing noble work.
Well you answered my question posed to the one who started the thread.
This keeps up I'll have to add it to my tagline....
Pray it was a fluke and that is the end of it.
I read further and another poster said this was a result of Hurricane Jeannie, what do you think?
The center of the remnant of Jeanne is just west of Washington DC and the strongest remaining bands have been hammering SE PA and Delaware with rain. When hurricanes decay they fall apart at the surface first, but can maintain a circulation higher in the atmosphere for a long time; this shear is what generates tornadoes in them...oddly, often more of them after the storm itself becomes weaker.
Did it possibly blow Biden away?
My wife is from Wilmington...I always love visiting there...if they were only more Republican...
It probably didn't do anything to him, but his house did get struck by lightning recently.
Yes it was.....and while I never wish anything like this on anyone, if I still lived in Delaware it would have been a god 50 miles north of me.
Thanks for the info, I had no idea.
