Fox: Commercial Pilots 'attacked' with laser
Fox News | Greta Van Susteren

Posted on 09/28/2004 8:12:49 PM PDT by ableChair

Greta Van Susteren reported that a Delta pilot enroute to Salt Lake City was lazed in the cockpit this last Wednesday. Only country I know that has that hardware (for lazing bomber pilots) was the Soviet Union. Pilot reportedly required medical treatment and this was not a minor injury (weak laser) wound. More will come out to tomorrow as this story hits the print press.

Well, I'm not a laser expert, but there some on this thread. Anyone?

Actually, yea! All I need to know are the parameters for debate. If there aren't any I'll play as hard as my opponent.

Someone insulted you and you thought it was okay to insult other people. Wrong. Moderators don't monitor threads. You got away with it until someone got sick of it and pushed the abuse button.

Just like in high school, you can get away with it if the teacher doesn't see you.

Well, I don't know that I would go THAT far, but if someone uses bar-room tactics with me then certainly it should be okay (and necessary for debate) for me to respond in kind to THAT person. The problem with 'others' is that if they get caught up in the maelstrom they can catch 'friendly fire'. It's just too difficult to switch tone back and forth for each post depending on who the poster was and precisely what they've said to you previously. To me, this is all about Machiavellian debate. It's what you have to do to WIN. Nothing personal, just what's required. As soon as the FIRST person gets out of line, the door's wide open. That's what Calculus guy did.

This is why I've always questioned the value of sports in "building character" at least the way it is practiced today. Too many people have this hockey player mentality of intimidation and pressing against the rules. The attitude tends to spread into civilized society.

But you don't win an argument by driving people into silence. You can only win it by being right. But if you become Mr. Kickbutt during a debate it becomes much more difficult to admit it when you are wrong. People like that become Democrats. They have gone over to the Dark Side. They believe there is no such thing as truth.

And Democrat scientists can do more damage than you can possibly imagine.

"Besides, that language started in this thread with a post to me from the guy that later got the Calculus question wrong...BTW, Calculus boy's handle is 'AdamSelene235'."

In your post #303 (removed by Moderator) you called AdamSelene235 every manner of foul name (that I won't repeat here) and for what? Here are AdamSelene235's own words to you (minus your own quotes) that you responded to so offensively in your now infamous reply...

"Coherence is mostly irrelevant to absorption. What you are looking for is a plot of atmospheric transmission as a function of wavelength. Any large college library should have it. Good night." --AdamSelene235
(source)
Alright, able Chair, where are the offensive words in AdamSelene235's post that you claimed to be responding to?

Virtually everyone responding to you here in this 500+ post thread has been uniformly courteous and attempted to help you, but you and you alone chose to be offensive in the extreme. And now you have the gall to try to foist the reasons for your nastiness off on one of the politest posters on FR?

An honorable man would hang his head in shame, but judging by your profile page, I won't hold my breath waiting for that to happen.

"Besides, that language started in this thread with a post to me from the guy that later got the Calculus question wrong...BTW, Calculus boy's handle is 'AdamSelene235'."

That is an outright lie. You started using obscenity and responded to my technical posts with increasing levels of filthy language as I refuted your points.

Furthermore, since you at least know Beer's law you should be capable of calculating the atmospheric transmission once you know the absorption coefficient of a particular wavelength.

Given your penchant to respond to dozens of valid technical points with egomanical rants, vicious profanity and now outright lies, I would say it is safe to say you are either a disruptor or seriously mentally ill. If neither is the case, I suggest you do some serious soul searching as you are likely inflicting great suffering on anyone with the misfortune to involve themselves in your personal life.

There is a small subset of lunatics who enjoy the sciences. My advisor had numerous publications and consequently would often receive letters from ranting nutcases on obscure technical subjects like phase conjugation.

He had a brilliant solution. He would write back "I'm no longer working on that, but here is the name of someone who is" Then he would attach the name of the last raving nutter who mailed him.

ableChair, I would love to hook you up with someone else to chat with, but I'm afraid there is nobody of your caliber on FreeRepublic.

Good Day.

Were you wearing protective goggles?

No. It wasn't required until '92 just as I was laid off.
Anyhow, wearing goggles is stupid for that kind of work. You're centering the beam past two stationary mirrors up to a oscillating mirror.
That would be pretty tough to do if you're wearing goggles and can't see the beam.

But, um, why would the attenuation factor be measured in decibels? Are you sure this isn't an equation for some kind of sound propagation?

Because decibels (tenths of a Bel) is a ratio of power.

I always wondered about that. What do people who need to see the laser beam do when they are required to wear protective goggles that make the beam invisible? I guess they have to rely on phosphor cards & stuff.

After final setup we would record the numbers off the photo-meter and run a scan on Dietz (blueprint) paper, but that was just for the QA records.

When the rule came down to wear goggles, we'd hang them around our neck, just in case a clue-less suit wandered by. Once the machine went into the clean room, nobody would bother you.
