The GOP doesn't own Jesus

It is time for Christian liberals to respond to the efforts of the Republican Party and all its spokespersons to paint -- with as broad a brush stroke as possible -- all liberals as immoral and anti-religious.
In his Wednesday column asking why so many people hate Bush, Cal Thomas implied that all liberals believe that God is merely an idea of man, that all liberals deny that it is God who makes the rules, that all liberals "wish to create their own version of heaven on Earth through the secular god of big government and a capitulation to our lower natures."
Well, Mr. Thomas, read your Gospels. What example did Jesus set for us but to struggle in love to make things ever better for the poor and the old and the sick? Does anything that Jesus did besides die matter to the religious right? Why do you effectively ignore the way he lived his life before his death?

Does anything that Jesus did besides die matter to the religious right? Why do you effectively ignore the way he lived his life before his death?
And to answer a version of your question: Many people hate aspects of the Republican program because of the hypocritical and self-serving claim of some in your party to an exclusive, divine sanction for its war, its effective indifference to the poor and its policies that are intended to solidify the power of its elite.

The author of this article misses an extremely important point. John Kerry has managed the ultimate in hypocrisy. While most pro-abortion politicians either deny that an unborn baby is a person, or avoid the issue altogether, Kerry admits life begins at conception but supports abortion anyway. In other words, he knows an unborn baby is a human being, but he's willing to sacrifice lives to get votes from the Democratic base. One might argue abort the Bible's stance on abortion, but once you've accepted that the baby is a life, as John Kerry has, you have no other choice but to accept that the Bible demands that we protect that life. Accuse George Bush of anything you like, but if you accept the most negative accusations against him on every subject, Afghanistan, Iraq, etc. and total up all the lives lost as a result, the total doesn't even come close to one year's death tally at the hands of the abortionists. The Bible says that "we ought to obey God rather than man", but John Kerry has made it clear that he will obey the will of the NOW, Planned Parenthood, and other stalwarts of the Democratic party. And you can pat yourself on the back for the accomplishments of liberals, but few of those liberals would include the liberals of today as their brothers. And I believe the Democrats of years past would be disgusted by the positions and what passes for leadership in the Democratic party today.

The thing that cracks me up is that this and other things like it that we've been hearing lately are really liberal attempts to co-opt religion in ways the "religious right" have never dreamed.
These people are such hypocrites.

This is the problem with the so-called 'Christian' lefties - in a nutshell:
"What example did Jesus set for us but to struggle in love to make things ever better for the poor and the old and the sick?"
Yes, read the Gospels. Nowhere . . NOWHERE does Our Lord advocate government as a means for aiding the poor and the sick. Christ intends for charity to come from each believer individually and through his or her church.
The left only exists because there are far too many gullible and uninformed people out there.

I believe abortion is wrong. I also believe it is wrong to bring a child into this world who's only chance for a reasonably normal and successful life is to be raised and cared for by others not responsible for its conception. That, for me, is the dilemma. I don't know the answer.

Anyone ever heard of the Christian Left? The right does not own Jesus, but the left has effectively disowned him.

Well, let the child decide: Would you rather be DEAD, or would you rather live in a home with parents who love you and care for you, even though they didn't conceive you? Where's the dilemma?

Jesus admonished us to give to the poor not the government, oh and BTW, he wouldn't like us to kill babies in the womb.

"The author of this article misses an extremely important point. John Kerry has managed the ultimate in hypocrisy".
That is it in a nutshell for Kerry and all Liberals.
I don't recall Jesus in His 'practicing' life; taking money; goods or services from the 'rich' and giving it to the Government; so that a chosen few could decide for the people; who was worthy of their Charity. . .
Jesus taught that Charity begins at home. . .in one's own heart; and is one's own gift.
Beyond that, the 'taking' of a person's good will. . .the 'taking' of another's rewards for redistribution is neither 'Love' nor 'Charity'.
That the Liberals imagine otherwise is where their arrogance begins. . .that they imagine they can 'recreate' the world in their own image and with their inverted ideals; is where it ends.

Barf! Liberals claim to be for the little people, but what about the little people in the womb? Bums and indigents have a voice on election day, but the only voice the unborn have is ours. We must prevail.
