VANITY: Message-Board Hosting Recommendations?
10/06/04 | Daniel J. Phillips

Posted on 10/06/2004 8:55:12 AM PDT by BibChr

The Message Board associated with my Biblical Christianity web site was spammed to death, and I need to find another host, with controlled access.

This guy with a real problem with God (and W) had spammed and abused our board for months, and then he finally just posted like 200 single-to-triple-letter posts ("a"), and wiped all existing posts off the board. I had banned him a dozen or two times, but he kept getting a new IP address.

So my best thought is that I need to find a clean, free Message Board host that allows me to require logons, so that nobody can post without, and I can effectively ban posters.

FR has a collection of some of the coolest IT/web heads I know, so I ask you.

Any recommendations?

I have a Christian board through ezboards and have been on many others that use them. You can password protect your board and make it "invitation ONLY", so that undesirable folks cannot access the boards without a password. Using that, people wanting to join the boards would give an e-mail address and you could e-mail them the password. If a person becomes a problem, ban them and change the password.

It is not free, but maybe you can charge a small fee (last one I joined cost me $10.00 per year) to offset the costs or do like FR and have a fundraiser!

Here's a link to a bulletin board software program loaded with features. I haven't used it, but it appears to be pretty well designed and has a low price.

You will need your own server or a web hosting site that will allow you to run it. Check the requirements and features to see if it meets your needs.

BTW, I found it and many others using a google search on the term 'bulletin board'. (Just ignore the office supply hits or use advanced search & exclude them.)

phpBB2

I've used it for several years and it's free.

Does everything you want as well as a whole bunch more.

You need to provide the link when you offer one.

That does look cool. Do you have one with them? Can you easily ban? How much control do you have over who logs on? Link to your board, if you have one?

Thanks!

Dan

www.excoboard.com

It's very flexible. You can make access as loose or as tight as you want.

I like it!
