Vote in U.S. inflames Europeans
International Herald Tribune ^ | 27 October 2004 | Jennifer Joan Lee

European media are sending correspondents all over the United States in an effort to delve into the American psyche. . "We want to understand why so many people are still on Bush's side; it's a kind of mystery to us," said Peter Frey, Berlin bureau chief for ZDF television in Germany. "We are asking the American people, 'Why are you voting for Bush?' We want to understand why he has this support."

Some Europeans support Bush, and they are equally as transfixed by the election. In Poland, one of a handful of Eastern Europe countries that sent troops to Iraq, people are following the race with unprecedented attention, worrying that a Bush defeat could have negative consequences for a nation that so controversially backed him. . "If Kerry wins, the antiwar countries in the European Union will say Bush lost because of Iraq, which means everyone who supported Bush in Iraq is also a loser," said Bartosz Weglarczyk, foreign editor at Gazeta Wyborcza, Poland's largest newspaper. "If Poland is seen as a loser on the debate on the war in Iraq, obviously, our position in the EU will be weakened."

I wish Europe would mind their own business. How would they like it if we butted into theirs? How would they like it if we sent scores of reporters into their countries asking their electorate why they voted for Chirac, Schroeder, et al.?

I often feel that the United States is a parent and Old Europe is the ungrateful 35-year-old son or daughter that needs to move out of our basement, get a job and a place of its own, and grow up. Thankfully, our allies in Eastern Europe, like Poland, are grown-ups, too.

Answer: We are supporting Bush because we don't want our country ending up like Europe - routinely corrupt, socialistic, dependent upon the UN for any semblance of authority, and oh, by the way, European.

We support him because of what he is and what he isn't.

He isn't a belly-crawling, cowardly, groveling appeaser to those who would destroy us.

He is a man.

The cringing, whiney little commie dependents of old Europe will never understand that. Unless they stand right up on their hind legs, think instead of reciting PC platitudes, and learn to face reality and then DEAL WITH IT!

We want to understand why he has this support

Maybe because we don't want to sink into a quagmire of socialism, as they are seemingly so content ot do?

One would hope that not all Europeans are blithering idiots.

It is the cowboy mystique, the quintessential American hero. If there is one stereotype that feeds into the myth of the West, it is of the lone sheriff in the town at High Noon, standing by himself in his dedication to duty and honor. He doesn't especially want the job, but somebody has got to do it, and he is wearing the badge.

Don Quixote, but with very real enemies out there facing him.

They hate Bush because they are only interested in themselves.

Self-interest is fine for them, but when our actions are in our own self-interest, then the Europeans are livid.

The ramifications of America not leading this war are staggering. Compromise with the terrorists which is what the Europeans want, and appeasement in the form of some monetary aid is just stupid. There can be no appeasement with those whose ideology is based on the complete and utter destruction of Western civilization.

Reminds me of a line by Pj O'Rourke about how "European intellectuals are constantly describing the Dark Night of Fascism is descending on America, but always lands in Europe".

Gee, imagine after three years of "evil bush evil American" propaganda by the left wing European press, they find Americans don't believe them...and still might vote for Bush..

Don't the stupid Americans know we should obey our betters and agree with the rich socialists?

In response, we are asking the European sheeple, "Why the hell don't you just mind your own business? You're going to be taken over by Islamic thugs in about thirty years anyway."

It is the cowboy mystique, the quintessential American hero.

Thanks for mentioning cowboys. Below is something forwarded to me back in January. Perhaps many of you have read it and may enjoy reading it again.

My views on Cowboys.......

It used to tick me off when the Muslim detractors in the Middle East, or the socialist detractors in Europe,

Hollywood and others called our President a cowboy.

But the more I think about it, the more glad I am that he is.

When I was a kid, cowboys were my heroes.

Well, I mean the ones in the white hats, not the black hats, who were usually the bad guys.

There was Tex Ritter, Tom Mix, Buck Jones, Hopalong Cassidy, the Lone Ranger.....

There was Red Ryder, Gene Autry, Roy Rogers......

Then later, there was Marshall Matt Dillon, Hoss & Li'l Joe Cartwright, Paladin, Maverick and others....

Rawhide's Rowdy Yates

What were common attributes of these legendary cowboys?

Here are a few:

1. They were never looking for trouble.

2. But when trouble came, they faced it with courage.

3. They were always on the side of right.

4. They defended good people against bad people.

5. They had high morals.

6. They had good manners.

7. They were honest.

8. They spoke their minds and they spoke the truth, regardless of what people thought or "political correctness," Which no one had ever heard of back then.

9. They were a beacon of integrity in the wild, wild West.

10. They were respected. When they walked into a saloon (where they usually drank only sarsaparilla), the place became quiet, and the bad guys kept their distance.

11. If in a gunfight, they could outdraw anyone. If in a fist fight, they could beat up anyone.

12. They always won. They always got their man. In victory, they rode off into the sunset.

Those were the days when there was such a thing as right and wrong, something blurred in our modern world, and denied by many.

Now, as a senior citizen, I still like cowboys.

They represent something good -- something pure that America has been missing.

Ronald Reagan was a cowboy.

I like Ronald Reagan, who was brave, positive, and who gave us hope.

He wore a white hat. To the consternation of his liberal critics, he had the courage to call a spade a spade and call the former Soviet Union what it was -- the evil empire.

Liberals hated Ronald Reagan.

They also hate President Bush because he distinguishes between good and evil.

He calls a spade a spade, and after 9-11 called evil "evil," without mincing any words, to the shock of the liberal establishment. That's what cowboys do, you know.

He also told the French to "put their cards on the table" (old West talk), which they did, exposing their cowardice and greed.

The radical Muslims are wrong. In the old West, might did not make right.

Right made might.

Cowboys in white hats were always on the side of right, and that was their might.

I am glad my President is a cowboy.

He got his man!

Cowboys do, you know.

I think this is kind of amusing. It is like having a grown up child in the basement as someone upthread said. Maybe some of them will decide to me more like us.
