Serious question about Brit Bashing on Free Republic...

Posted on 11/05/2004 2:53:54 PM PST by BritishBulldog

Just lately (noticeably since the US election result) there seems to be an awful lot of anti-British sentiment on here (there always was a little but I put that down to a handful of xenophobic kiddies)

What I would like to know is do most Freepers now share the low opinion that some (many) on here seem to have of our nation or is it just a small (but very vocal) minority of morons?

I've enjoyed this forum (for the relatively short time that I've contributed) and have always liked Americans in general, but I now find myself reconsidering my thoughts on both.

If we Brits are not liked or wanted around here, I think I'll probably discontinue my involvement.

Maybe you consider Franxz Sigel great? Or is it the puppet Eisenhower?

Schwatzkopf is the only great German General I can think of, unless Sherman is German!

We like the people and the current government.

However, we do NOT like the media there.

If you think you're offended, try to imagine being American and reading some of that stuff written in those papers of yours. If you just attempt to have some empathy you would see that the US is probably quite reserved compared to what is being said and generated in GB and the rest of Europe. So far we have not called 59,000,000 Brits morons, we do generally not speak of you as uncultured people. We don’t periodically call Blair a “Cowboy” and so on. Turn it around and you’d think 10 times worse of the Brits than the Americans as far as the media mud slinging and how lowbrow stories have gone.

"Brit Bashing", if it exists from some quarters here, is not, in my opinion, directed toward you, the British people. There has been a lot of "Bush Bashing" by the British media during and post this election campaign, and this has created a backlash, I am sure. Although Mr Blair is much to the left of most of us on this forum, I would say that he is well liked, even admired - more so, probably than some in the Royal family.

Personally, I have a big soft spot in my heart for the UK and for the people of the UK. My paternal grandmother was born in England (East Titherly) and grew up there, coming to America in 1884 with two of her brothers. I have many relatives, quite a few whom I have met and know, in the UK.

From '78-'81 I lived in Northern Ireland, and came to have a love for the Irish people. During that time it was really neat to be able to hope a plane and be in London an hour later! London is one of my favorite cities, one I have visited many times through the years.

Now, back to the "Bashing" - the bashings I have seen on this forum do not hold a candle to the "Bashings" I have witnessed during televised sessions of your Parliment!

Any bashing you have seen relates to the Guardian article that called millions of Americans, idiots. That type of propaganda causes more damage than anything. Imagine if USA Today had a front page article titled with the same thing about the British

And that superficial analysis may be what is getting Bulldogs back up

1. The article that called millions of Americans, idiots. was a Daily Mirror artictle

2. The Daily Mirror is not equivilent to USA Today

Comparison
USA Today is The Sun right wing, pro-American
LA Times is The Daily Telegraph right wing, pro-American
NY Post is The Daily Mirror left wing, anti-American

They drive on the wrong side of the road too, don't forget that.

They just don't drive on the French Side of the road. Why did the US decide to follow the Emperor's Napoleon's dumb choice?

Rommel was not American. Germany has had many great generals. No arguement.

Most of America's great generals had British Ancestry.

You're obviously fishing for compliments, positive reinforcement, to partially assuage whatever personal issues you're not dealing with. I'll be frank : most FReepers only attack creeps, whether they're American, French, Canadian, French Canadian, German, British or the Amassadors of the Outlands of the Centauri Cluster. While stereotyping is the cause of much suffering, opinions are human nature. We have them. Learn to deal with it.

I hope you are getting an answer, and that you will remain a Freeper!

My husband's family is English, I love visiting England, I've traveled with Brits and have a deep respect for all those who have stood with us in this difficult time. And I pray for those (and their families) who have given their lives in Iraq.

Just as in this country, I criticize those who go negative against us. Not just The Guardian and such, but the press from whatever country --even our Canadian neighbors.

For those Brits who don't feel as I do ---that's fine. I've got lots of lib friends here, and we get along fine.

We just won an election, after a difficult fight. That, together with the strife in the ME, makes us sensitive. You know how outspoken we are ------ chalk it up to that.

And please stay!

I don't care much for Brits. It makes me sick how anti-war and anti-Bush they. they really ought to know better when it comes to not appeasing evil on the world stage, given their great history in WWII.

And also, please tell Tony Blair to shut the hell up about how "Mideast peace" is the most important problem in the world (it isn't; liquidating Islamofascism is). And also tell Arabist Tony to STOP CALLING IT "PALESTINE".

"Any philosophy which suggests that people's actions are predetermined by their genes"

No one suggests that people's ACTIONS are predetermined by their genes, but people's personalities, such as being an introvert or an extrovert are most definitely influenced by their genes.

Why do you think some people have artistic or musical talent? Why does such talent often run in families? Do you think you can take just anyone and have that person become a Leonardo da Vinci or Mozart or Michael Jordan for that matter, just by putting them in the right environment? Don't be silly. There is such a thing as in born talent and that talent is passed along in the genes.

Don't be pedantic just because you were brainwashed by your liberal professors. Open your eyes, do some research, and drop your comfortable biases.

Question to you: I have never heard of the British bashing, polls, letter writting compaign to attempt to influence American voters to England's way of thinking, I have seen headlines from British papers attacking American intelligence and values. When our President visited, there was picketing and signs and slurs used against him. But I don't recall any headlines in our papers, picketing of your Prime Minister or royal family or headlines attacking anything about what you hold most near and dear. So we should just ignore all of the stuff GB media/lefties are tossing our way? This of course, as always, is my very own opinion. I don't personally have a problem with posters from GB, I like to hear from conservatives from other countries, except maybe not France;^}

"Temperament and intelligence are not inherited."

Thus sayith Lutonian, intoning the great truths revealed to him by Allah.

A tendency to have a certain type of temperament and level of intelligence are inherited, although one's environment is also important in determining the type of temperament one ends up with and the level of intelligence one ultimately achieves.

Thank you Mr. The_Englishman, I would love to see some of those headlines! I guess our evil msm only likes us to see how much G.B. hates us! It would be absolutely great to see some good press from some newspapers and even some average on the street Brits, that like and respect us. As I do all the Brits who are joined with us in fighting terrorism and the British troops in harm's way with our troops.
