I'm transferring to Omaha, Ne. Anyone From There?

Posted on 11/05/2004 7:54:13 PM PST by maineman

I will be going to Omaha this Spring. Can anyone tell me about the City? I have 4 children. How is the crime rate? Do you enjoy living in Omaha? Any first hand knowledge will be greatly appreciated.

Basically a nice place, but

Avoid North Omaha

and

Enrolling kids in the Omaha Public Schools is basically child abuse (I know....I teach in them). Enroll your kids in Bellevue, Millard or Westside.

Also, South Omaha has a Hispanic gang problem, and the mayor refuses to acknowledge that Omaha has any gangs at all (he's a dumbass Democrat), so Bellevue, LaVista, Ralston or west Omaha would be your best bet for living here.

One downside, though, Nebraska property taxes are through the roof.

We are not originally from the Neborg, but it grows on you. The zoo is great and the homeschooling laws are okay, if you are one of us. We lived in North O for six years, it was okay. We now live in Millard (Sarpy county) for the gun laws. West O is the pricey end of town, though. Alot of military live in our development. We are former AF. Send me an e-mail if you want more info about homeschooling laws. One thing you will need to know: green means go, red means go Big Red and yellow means go REAL FAST!

Hey, welcome to our great state. Stay to the suburbs in Omaha, enjoy the Old Market, visit the zoo during Christmas, and support the Huskers. You'll do fine!!! Oh, and by the way - vote against Hagel.

You'll like it here, nice area and you've got your choice of living in Omaha, or one of the adjacent towns like Bellevue, La Vista or Papillion or across the river in Iowa where the property taxes are lower. Great area with a lot of good things going for it.

Conservative. Boring. Suburban. Not much in the way of glitter or glamor. But rock solid Midwestern values. Relatively cheap housing. Leave-your-door unlocked atmosphere. Could probably get to know your neighbors, but they're just dull anyway. The kids' Christmas programs at school are the highlight of the social season. About what you'd expect from Nebraska.

Think of it as a cow town with dreams of going to the city some day.

There's nothing in Omaha. You will become depressed with boredom. You will end up at the end of your own rope. don't do it!

If you start training now, you'll be able to eat those 24 oz prime rib dinners just like a local...

I heard the other day that Nelson is thinking of running for President in 2008. Hes conservative enough to win, but he would never make it through the primarys on the east coast.

Born in Omaha. Raised in Ralston, a suburb on the southwest side. Ralston, LaVista, Papillion, Bellevue...all real nice communities with plenty of jobs, decent schools and moderately priced housing.

Yeah, yeah. This is where you tell me about the symphony and the Joslyn Museum and other such nonsense that nobody ever goes to. I've read the Chamber of Commerce brochures too.

If you think Omaha has a lot going on, you've never been anywhere there's a lot going on.
