The moment Mineta declared that we would not be using racial, demographic or ideological profiling, he gave ample proof of his lack of seriousness and suitability as a wartime Secretary of Transportation.

I'm not sure that Lieberman would really care if the Senate picked up another Republican seat. At this point, the Senate is clearly going to be Republican majority for at least two years, one more seat doesn't mean much since it doesn't make it to fillibuster-proof numbers. So the Republican Governor of CT would fill that seat with an appointee who would serve the remainder of the term. Lieberman's seat is up in '06 and you have to think that it would more than likely be won by a Democrat. If Lieberman were to take a cabinet position, the Democrats really lose nothing but a vote, but chances are they aren't going to have enough votes to matter anyway.

The way things are going, somebody should have started a "Live Thread" on cabinet resignations.

I've worked with the USDA quite a bit and I didn't have any particularly negative workings with Ann Veneman. To the contrary, she seemed instrumental in getting DigiTop up and running (the electronic library at NAL).

Also, having Homeland Security and the USDA work together was a huge undertaking that I thought went rather well with her as secretary. But that is my experience and it only is a teeny tiny portion of the USDA as a whole.

GW seems to be knowledgable when it comes to cabinet appointments, so I'm sure whomever he chooses will bring positive aspects to the various department.

You apparently don't get it. You're not as smart as a liberal. After all you can only reach a conclusion AFTER examining the facts. Liberals are so smart they can reach a conclusion without any facts. Only idiots reach a conclusion from facts.

Feelings, nothing more than feelings....Feeeeeeeelings, wo-o-o, feeeeeeelings.

There, is that better?

Clinton had massive turnover. Most of his cabinet positions had two and three people. He had very few who stayed for an entire term let alone a second term.

It's quite normal, these jobs are heavy duty stress and people want out of the rats nest called Washington DC and want to return to private life.

LOOK FOR ORION SAMUELSON AS THE NEXT SEC OF AGRICULTURE!!!!

That makes waaay too much sense. The various criminal organizations like farmland, con-agra, etc, will raise a stink with their family owned politicians and lobbyists if one of their own isn't crowned.

My short list:

Orion Samuelson
Derry Brownfield
Jeff Head

Appoint no bureaucrats, take no prisoners!

Tommy Thompson said he was resigning, at least to some Wisconsin media sources.

"I think the President should appoint Don Nickles as Secretary of Agriculture -- great conservative from a solid red state who is retiring from the Senate"

perfect.

That made me burst out laughing! Lieberman for Secretary of State -- the EU would go nuts not to mention the Arab states! I love it!

So true to remember that Clinton's cabinet turnover was largely due to corruption or incompetence. Commerce Scty Ron Brown crashed and burned before he could be indicted.

Now, maybe, we can find someone who will let us test for BSE a little more stringently than the current plans.

I just got this email

There was no immediate word on who Bush would nominate to head the $80 billion
department. Lobbyists and congressional aides have said possible replacements
could include Allen Johnson, the current farm negotiator with the U.S. Trade
Representative's office, White House agriculture advisor Chuck Conner, or
13-term Texas Rep. Charles Stenholm, a farm policy expert and Democrat who was
defeated on Nov. 2.

The White House was also expected to announce on Monday the resignations of
Energy Secretary Spencer Abraham and Secretary of State Colin Powell and
possibly a fourth member of the cabinet.

How about Senator Ben Nelson (D-NE) for Secretary of Agriculture? The state has a GOP governor, so it will give us a 56th GOP Senator. And Nelson is a fairly conservative Democrat, so Bush can claim that he is reaching across the aisle without violating his principles. And if Ben Nelson does a lousy job Bush can always fire him later.

Other conservative Democrats who Bush could name to his Cabinet are outgoing (in more ways than one) Senator Zell Miller (D-GA), Congressman Collin Peterson (D-MN) and Congressman Tim Holden (D-PA). In the cases of Peterson and Holden, the GOP would be sure to win the special election to replace them.
