Ellen (DeGeneres) Hooks Up Military With Cruises

LOS ANGELES - For relatives and friends of U.S. troops serving in Iraq, "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" was the place to be. Studio audience members, all with a military connection, were surprised with the gift of a free cruise at a taping Tuesday. The episode of the syndicated talk show, with guest Tom Hanks, aired Wednesday.

A total of 250 seven-day cruises for four, along with taxes and fees, were given in appreciation of troops deployed from three California bases: Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, Camp Pendleton and Fort Irwin.

Celebrity Cruises is providing the vacations, available at any time to allow for troops overseas to take part on their return, according to a spokeswoman for the show.

DeGeneres also joined with the USO to send more than 5,000 care packages to the audience's relatives and friends in Iraq. The episode will be repeated on Thanksgiving on the Armed Forces Network.

I guess this would be a good time to write notes thanking Celebrity Cruises as well!

We seem to be quick on sending notes saying we disapprove of companies (and I agree with this and join in often); maybe sending positive notes when they do things right is a good idea also.

Actually, thank Celebrity Cruises because they were the ones that gave away over a million dollars in vacation cruises. I'm glad that Ellen used her show for this good thing, but it probably wasn't even her idea.

I agree with you. The question uppermost in my mind is: what's her gimmick? H'weirdos don't do anything for nothing. Does this give her a jumpstart on her show? The show's ratings haven't risen to where her backers would like. I don't care for her and will never watch her. She's typical H'weirdo and looking to rise to fame that H'weirdo would like to see their "stars". We're being used and now she's using our troops. Aw, what the heck? Our troops can use all the freebies that can be squeezed out of H'weirdos like this queer.

File this under "Whodathunkit..."

I work in the television industry. A recent job had me working with her brother Vance-- he was a producer on the show (I'm an editor). Vance has also been seen in front of the cameras on the Daily Show.

One day he walked into my bay to give me some notes on a cut and he noticed a little flag-raisers of Iwo Jima poster I had on the wall. He eyed it curiously and said in his flat monotone: "What's THAT all about?"

I prepared for battle. Told him that I was a patriot, supported the troops, America and especially the Marines-- the guys who put it all on the line first.

He nodded and said: "I was a Marine."

Whoa! We immediately started talking about famous battles and operations, etc. Stupidly, I didn't ask him where he was trained, when he served, if he was deployed, etc.

I'll bet Ellen respects the military more than we might think...

I bet you are right -- they are trying to make her more Oprah-like. I do not like her, either, at ALL. And it just doesn't seem in character for her, either, do you think?

I agree. Here's a link to Ms. DeGeneres' show. I was happy to send a positive note to her.

I'll give her the temporary benefit of the doubt.

She went 'Middle Aged Crazy' and destroyed her career.
Lots of middle aged guys ruin their lives over a hot chick and have to start over.

I love FR for the libertarian open-mindedness.

As far as I know, ED hasn't pulled a Dixie Chick , nor protested for gay marriage. Her life is NONE of my business (nor yours).

What's your fluckin problem? She's doing a good thing, can't ya just view it without a jaundiced eye?

She was great in Finding Nemo. I'm not a fan of anything else she has done - except this.

It's amazing to me that a no talent like ellen is still in the news.If she were not a lesbian she would have long ago faded into obscurity..

As I recall, Pontiac paid for all those cars that Oprah "gave away", but she took credit for it. She's one of the richest women in the world and she didn't even spring to pay the tax, but she reaped all the publicity. At least with the cruises, the taxes were also paid by Celebrity Cruises.

I always thought she was funny. Don't give a damn whether about her personal life. She just did a FINE thing.

Agreed. Good for Ellen.

Thanks! Now I need to also find the one for Celebrity Cruises, since it seems they paid (donated) the cruises.

You know, I just about dislike everyone and anyone that is a "traitor" Democrat, but you have to hand to both Ellen DeGeneres and Tom Hanks! They may have supported John Kerry, but they kept it pretty close to the vest. I think Ellen learned her lesson that it is not wise to tick off 51% of your audience before you begin. Tom Hanks had learned that from the start of his career. If these folks are taking care of our military families, then that is just peachy with me!!! I heartly commend them for their loyalty and patriotism. That cannot, however, be said for the overwhelming number of traitor/treason members of the "current" Democrat Party who could care less about our military in arms and their families!!!

Although I know a few of FR's more unappeasable churchladies questionable newbies will still be taking their shots at her in this thread, I still say: 'Well done, Ellen!'
