US Embassy Jerusalem move postponed
By JANINE ZACHARIA
WASHINGTON
US President George W. Bush, who promised during his first presidential campaign to start relocating the US Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem as soon as he took office, has postponed the move for another six months, citing national security.
"My administration remains committed to beginning the process of moving our embassy to Jerusalem," he said in a statement issued Wednesday. The Jerusalem Embassy Act of 1995 obligated the US to move its embassy to Jerusalem by May 31, 1999, but allows the president to delay the move every six months.
campaign promise? does that phrase have any meaning?
Some people thought that for President Bush it would. Some people saw him as different than, oh, say... Bill Clinton. I guess in this one respect the two are the same.
To be honest I am sure both Israel and the US have more important issues to deal with.
Is jerusaleum safer than the current place?
Isn't that an abuse of a meaningless trite phrase?
I just wish W could treat us as adults and tell us what the actual reason is; Eight postmonements aren't enough?
Something does not smell right here.
Evidently not.
Unless you're a "palestinian". After they deal with the Jews, that's where they want their capital.
ok, but ease up on the all caps, it hurts.
Ping.
The real problem is that the Jerusalem Embassy Act of 1995 is an idiotic law that never should have been passed in the first place. The U.S. has had a long-standing policy of refusing to locate embassies in foreign capitals that are located in disputed territories, which pretty much makes Jerusalem out of the question at least for now.
Oh well, guess the campaigns over. Republicans should be more careful when talking about legal and moral obligations. Sometimes it makes them look like dems. GOP Party Platform 2004
The Middle East and Persian Gulf
we must ensure that Israel remains safe and secure.
It is important for the United States to support and honor Israel, the only true democracy in the Middle East. We will ensure that Israel maintains a qualitative edge in defensive technology over any potential adversaries. We will not pick sides in Israeli elections. The United States has a moral and legal obligation to maintain its Embassy and Ambassador in Jerusalem. Immediately upon taking office, the next Republican president will begin the process of moving the U.S. Embassy from Tel Aviv to Israel's capital, Jerusalem.
Isn't the Nepalese capital disputed by the Maoist rebels as well? The US maintains an embassy there, even though the Maoists claim they should be in control of it. Even in Afghanistan the US has an embassy in Kabul, but that territory is disputed as the Taliban seek to take it over.
Clearly. 347 to 47 in the House, 93 to 5, President Clinton signs it, President Bush's party platform iin 2004 says The United States has a moral and legal obligation to maintain its Embassy and Ambassador in Jerusalem. Immediately upon taking office, the next Republican president will begin the process of moving the U.S. Embassy from Tel Aviv to Israel's capital, Jerusalem.
Just another dumb *ss law passed by an overwhelming majority in both parties over the objection of a handful who, of course, truely represent the will of the American people.

Every situation is different. I guess they made the promise before the second intifada when things were quieter and a move to Jeruseleum would have been less "controversial".
Not many Jews in Nepal, so the Arabs don't much care.
