Would you eat dog meat if you were in a Korean jail awaiting your trial?

If hungry enough. Hell, I've eaten grasshopper, frog, snail, rattlesnake, squid, squirrel, alligator, buffalo, horse, and even what they call a hamburger in Boston*. It's all meat in the final analysis.

* - I swear to God, I never would have imagined that anyone could screw up a hamburger, but some genius cook in a restaurant in Boston figured out a way! Worst meal of my entire life.

I suppose I'd have to or starve. I don't think the Korean authorities are very interested in the complaints of prisoners.

I would eat dog meat if I thought it would make PETA squeal...

It would sure be nice to some enterprising prison cooks to make sure that some pork fat is added to all the muslim meals. (Just to make them more tasty, of course).

Some cling to an old tactic of pumping up the calories — serving 3,500 to 3,800 a day, instead of the standard 2,500 to 3,000 — to keep inmates full-bellied and calm...

Actually, 2500 is for sedantary people. A large man who is sedantary needs 3500...or more...depends if you are five foot four or six foot four...If the prisons only gave 2500 calories, you'd have riots...

You can buy fresh chicken for $0.60/lb.

The slightly rotten, maggoty chicken is even less, and perfectly suitable for convicts.

That may be a good price but a local grocery here always has chicken leg quarters at $2.90 for #10 bag($0.29/lb)which makes your point that for $10.00 per day, especially when buying bulk, a prisoner can be fed quite well.

I say let the jails stop serving pork because of Muslim inmates. Just as long as the local rabbi makes sure all the food the jail serves is Kosher.

I'll bet you could do well on Fear Factor :-)

Lets be realistic here...the sheriff or warden usually has an allowance of $10 a day or less to feed prisoners (in most states). No prisoner is going to get much of a meal anyway.

$10? Are you joking? That's more than enough money to cook them a core of rice, beans, potatoes, meat stews with plenty left over to pay for vegetables, fruits and (optional) dessert

Not so.
Most prison food is high in carbs
and the inmates come out weighing
a lot more, unless they workout.

I've eaten (tried, at least) all of the above -- except grasshopper -- plus turtle, raccoon, (young 'coon is excellent barbecued) 'possum, armadillo, and most every critter that swims or lives in fresh or salt water. (My parents were avid hunters and fishermen -- who taught me to be able to survive "off the land" -- what a priceless heritage!)

(...nothing against the grasshoppers. I just never seemed to have enough for a meal -- probably because I used them up for fish bait...)

I can buy chicken at my grocery for $.69/lb. (whole chicken)

I can buy a 10lb bag of leg/thigh quarters for (currently) $.29/lb to $.39/lb.

It's beef that's a killer right now. (Ground beef $1.79/lb) to (chuck roasat, 2.79/lb)

Pork. It's what's for Dinner.

(from anecdotal evidence only...)

My step-brother was in for 10 years back in the late 80's to mid 90's, and he was a trim 160. (5'10")

When he got out, he put on 40lbs within 3 months. (I think it was because he started drinking beer when he got out.)

2 years ago, he did 6 months (felon in possession of a firearm) and dropped ~30lbs because of the food. This time, he's kept it off.

Too bad he's more conservative than I am.... and can't legally vote yet. (But I won't go into that.)

"Inmate rights advocates condemn as dehumanizing what they say is the growing practice of requiring inmates to eat in their cells, a measure taken to prevent fights in dining halls."

One would think that room service would be considered a luxury!

What happened to the idea of letting the prisoners grow/raise their own food? Does Angola Prison in Louisiana still have a farm where the prisoners grow their own food? I think it used to.
