Odd Couple Gibson, Moore Exchange Praise

PASADENA, Calif. - Mel Gibson and Michael Moore have been used as shorthand for cultural and political divisions among Americans, but how do the filmmakers feel about each other? Cue the Hollywood ending — it's hugs all around.

"I saw the film. I liked it," Gibson told AP Radio Sunday at the 31st Annual People's Choice Awards, countering the contention that "Fahrenheit 9/11" fans and "The Passion of the Christ" enthusiasts are mutually exclusive groups.

Moore's critique of President Bush's policies since the Sept. 11 attacks and Gibson's film about Jesus Christ's final hours were huge hits at the box office in 2004, and both won People's Choice awards Sunday. "Fahrenheit 9/11" was named favorite movie and "The Passion of the Christ" was the favorite drama.

"I feel a kind of strange kinship with Michael," Gibson said. I mean, they're trying to pit us against each other in the press, but this is all just a hologram, you know. They've really got nothing to do with one another. They were used as some kind of divisive left-right thing."

Moore said he saw Gibson's film twice, and even took his father to see it.

"I thought it was a powerful piece of filmmaking," Moore told AP Radio Sunday. "I'm a practicing Catholic, and you know I think Mel and I may be from different wings of the Catholic Church. My film might have been called 'The Compassion of the Christ.'"

'Conspiracy Theory' actually directed by frequent Mel Gibson collaborator Richard Donner (Lethal Weapon movies, Maverick).

Oh come on, Mel Gibson, don't be so fatuous. Fahrenheit 9/11 was a bunch of garbage. I hope he has to 'clarify' this statement.

The remarks I read slamming the Iraq war makes me even wonder if his Christianity is real.

Are you implying that those who opposed the invasion of Iraq aren't Christian?

Anyone who would stand by while Saddam filled yet more mass graves with tortured victims doesn't seem like much of a Christian to me.

Are you referring to the gassing of the Kurds? Do Christians normally wait 20 years before they go to someones aid? Lends new meaning to the Good Samaritan concept.

It's always good to bring this thread back. The article was actually written by a Nader supporter, Dave Kopel.

Well, there's the proof. Now I won't care too much if he says what he does...at least something backs it up. I personally don't think it's that big a deal.

"clarify"

He said he liked it, disagreed with parts of it. Moore is extremely talented. You could objectively find something good about it from a film/production standpoint. I object to the content and the messenger, but I'll never say it wasn't a well done movie (haven't seen it, but his other work was skillfully done - Roger and Me comes to mind). So I'm thinking Mel was just being nice, being a little flamboyant in his praise. He wasn't out there campaigning for Kerry.

Are there different wings? Perhaps the wheat and the tares wings?

Sorry, but that has me LOL.

I cannot wait for the response.

I can't believe Gibson said that. He must not have a clue about anything.

They don't call it the left coast for nothing. The People's Choice Awards was a joke this year anyway. This is the first year they didn't use Gallup for the data, and instead they used Internet polling which provided the wacko libs/dims a way to rig the vote for Moore. The lengths they are willing to go to to move their agenda is simply breathtaking.

yes, that's why I don't understand the comment: "The remarks I read slamming the Iraq war makes me even wonder if his Christianity is real".
