We use Cyberguard here in the office. I am not sure if we are blocking inbound ports. At home I use Norton and would never turn off my firewall. I can check from home whether or not I can see the pictures and get back to you.

Maybe your browser is blocking the pics.

Maybe your browser is blocking the pics.

That possibility occurred to me as well. I use Firefox so I disabled popup blocking, and no joy. Then I brought up IE and tried to access the pix - still no joy.

So I don't believe that it's browser-related.

Also, several FReepers who used IE had the problem as well.

"...the fact that nobody is talking makes me wonder. Guess I'll page John_Rob again...sigh..."

Snope,

Sigh...nobody's talking? Some people are needy, others anal, some are a combination of the two...

RFNY.COM is hosted by THRIFTWEB.COM - their email is thriftweb@yahoo.com - perhaps someone there will be able to help you (I sincerely hope so...sigh...)

There's probably something in Windoze that enables responding to reverse DNS requests... i.e. if your Gatesware is rejecting them, it's probably not a setting in the browser but something buried in "Networking" in the "Control Panel" or whatever dumaflodget thingumbob... it probably *would* affect all browsers you try.

my wife is bugging me to bring up Windoze so she can use Screamweaver... maybe I'll probe Windoze's slimy entrails while she's doing that.

One other behavior... the 32xxx port requests get iterated (32962, 32963, 32972, 32973... etc... and it'll keep trying forever. (as I said, I've seen this behavior with other sites that I can't access; my theory is it's probing for an open reverse DNS port. (good luck you P.O.S. snoopware))

Here's a better explanation of what I was trying to convey to you.  It's from GRC.com, a website for Gibson Research Corp.   The owner is Steve Gibson, a very well known computer GURU.   I've used his stuff for years (since the mid '80s)    He is very good!    He has a free testing service called 'Shields UP' that will test your computer's security and stealth mode.  I've linked to it below, along with an explanation of why you should run one of his tests (but do them all - it's quite revealing).

From:  ShieldsUP!

A web browser's request to a remote server may contain information about the user and the computer system running the browser. The composition of this information is dependent upon the specific browser and version, the browser's security settings, and even — in the case of cookies — the browser's history of previous contact with the remote server being queried.

A web browser's request headers might also be modified by the request's passage through some other agent such as a privacy filter which deliberately removes potentially revealing information, or a proxy server which might add headers to identify the client on whose behalf the proxy's request is being made.

Information such as cookies, the URL of the web page which contained the link that referred the browser to the remote server (potential privacy/tracking concerns there), the identity and version of the browser, and the format of information that can be accepted for the server's reply — and more — are all transmitted by the user's browser for every request. In some cases, the user's screen display resolution and color depth or the operating system and version being used is also included. It is important to recognize that the user's web browser can send any sort of information it chooses and the typical web-surfing user is none the wiser. In some situations, as mentioned above, intermediate Internet servers, such as transparent caching proxies, may process and forward the browser's request while appending their own data to the query; typically a "Via" or "Client" tag.

In other words, without firewalls, nats, etc., your browser automatically sends referrer information about the web page you are on to the server requesting it - this has nothing to do with FR.

One of the tests in 'Shields UP' is a port probe - it will tell you the status of your ports - open, closed, or stealth.  You can even probe specific ports.   Check it out.

Hey big guy, I didn't mean to ruffle your feathers. In no way do I suspect YOU are trying to pull something on us FReepers.

What we have here is a simple technical problem I am trying to understand.

OK, you said RFNY.COM is hosted by THRIFTWEB.COM

Well, not exactly. The registrar is someone called Hank Hayes. If you go to www.hankhayes.com, you see this picture, whom I assume to be Hank Hayes.

Hank Hayes?

Here's what I get with a whois search:

Thanks for the link to Shields Up! Running FireFox 1.0 and Zone Alarm, I got:
Unable to connect with NetBIOS to your computer. All attempts to get any information from your computer have FAILED. (This is very uncommon for a Windows networking-based PC.) Relative to vulnerabilities from Windows networking, this computer appears to be VERY SECURE since it is NOT exposing ANY of its internal NetBIOS networking protocol over the Internet.

And

Your system has achieved a perfect "TruStealth" rating. Not a single packet — solicited or otherwise — was received from your system as a result of our security probing tests. Your system ignored and refused to reply to repeated Pings (ICMP Echo Requests). From the standpoint of the passing probes of any hacker, this machine does not exist on the Internet. Some questionable personal security systems expose their users by attempting to "counter-probe the prober", thus revealing themselves. But your system wisely remained silent in every way. Very nice.

So I'm pretty safe unless I do something stupid like shutting down my firewall to see some pictures.

BTW, from the [Internet Assigned Numbers Authority], Ports 32897-33330 are "Unassigned".

So you're saying that the registrant of any web site is also the Domain host?!? That's news to me.

Are you sure that Hank Hayes owns the server that hosts www.HankHayes.com - or is it possible

that you are talking out of the back of your head?

The way I read the info in #150, the person who "owns" rfny.us is Hank Hayes. He pays the bills, and is the administrative contact. Just like FreeRepublic owns this website, although the actual hardware and software are in San Jose.

I guess I was right that Gigantor=Hank Hayes, since the photo on his your website just changed to a bogus picture of Snopercod.

But frankly, I don't care who owns it or hosts it; I just want to know why your website (thank you for confirming it is yours) is trying to access unused ports on everybody's computer.

OK, all of you have been pinged, with no response in over 24 hours.

We have a FReeper here - Hank Hayes, AKA Gigantor - who seems to be trying to hack into FReeper computers via his website for some reason. Read the previous posts for the details.

Now, both on his own website and here on FR (post #150), he makes a personal attack on me. To wit:

Is the management here going to enforce the rules or not? Is the management here concerned at all about being used to collect God-only-knows-what private information on FReepers?

Thanks, RebelTex.

I ran all the tests and my computer got a perfect score... Steve Gibson says, "despite many attempts, it wisely refused to answer. Very cool".

As I mentioned yesterday, I was able to see all but two of the photos and I got no error messages such as others did.

And that is very cool.

I use no "add on" firewall software... just WinXP SP2.

From Internet Assigned Numbers Authority
"UNASSIGNED PORT NUMBERS SHOULD NOT BE USED. THE IANA WILL ASSIGN THE NUMBER FOR THE PORT AFTER YOUR APPLICATION HAS BEEN APPROVED."

So our friend "Hank" is violating internet protocol by trying to probe unassigned ports on our machines via his website, as well as forum rules by directing FReepers to a (possibly malicious) site that he runs to boost the hits there.

Paging all software types (repage in some cases) for comments....

snopercod,

You continue to refuse to answer the question: So you're saying that the registrant of any web site is also the Domain host?

Now you're backpedaling why is that, snopercod?

Again, I said RFNY.COM is hosted by THRIFTWEB.COM

and you said: Well, not exactly. The registrar is someone called Hank Hayes.

Why do you claim that the registrar of a web site must also be the Web host? You apparently either misunderstand or are ignorant about Domain registration, parking, and web site hosting.

But frankly, I don't care who owns it or hosts it; I just want to know why your website (thank you for confirming it is yours) is trying to access unused ports on everybody's computer.

Are you sure that a 'web site' is trying to do this.

The problem you have is with the Website's HOST and the way their SERVERS and software configured - talk to them.

Hank, I am talking to "them". It's obvious to the most casual observer that you are "them", since you have administrative access to hankhayes.com and hankhayes is the administrator of rfny.com.

I did notice that you've gained a few pounds since those pictures at hankhayes.com were taken (the ones you've left up, anyway). But hey, who hasn't?

You really shouldn't misrepresent yourself here.
