Rachel Corrie's family sues Israel, IDF

The family of Rachel Corrie, a pro-Palestinian activist killed by an Israel Defense Forces bulldozer in Rafah two years ago, sued the State of Israel and the IDF for damages in the Haifa District Court on Tuesday.

The 24-year-old Corrie was killed on March 16, 2003 when she tried to block an IDF bulldozer from destroying a Palestinian house near the Philadelphi Route, the strip of land in the Gaza Strip bordering Egypt.

An IDF investigation ruled the incident was an accident and that the driver did not see Corrie, and the military prosecutor's office decided not to press charges in connection with Corrie's death.

Corrie's parents, brother, and sister, who are represented by Umm al-Fahm attorney Hussein Abu-Hussein, argue Corrie was killed despite the fact that she was wearing bright clothing and had identified herself as an activist with the pro-Palestinian International Solidarity Movement.

Corrie's family argues that the bulldozer driver intentionally used unreasonable force. According to the family, there was no fighting in the area at the time and there was no threat to soldiers' lives.

The family has asked for roughly $324 thousand in direct damages, as well as punitive damages. They also said they have yet to receive all of the material from the IDF investigation into the matter.

I don't know if it is so much joy as black humor. I wish that Rachel Corrie had not died. It was an unfortunate accident. But black humor is another matter altogether.

1. I am Jewish and not bound by "turn your cheek".

LOL! Neither am I. Besides, I've already turned all 4 cheeks. "Turn the other cheek" is a loser's philosophy.

2. Compassionate conservatism is liberalism with a sideorder of religiousity.

True...

3. Rachel Corrie died defending terrorists. That makes her one in my book. Good riddence to the traitor.

Good riddance - sure. But expressing joy over her useless death comes across as more of a Muslim thing to me. Like, the way the Muslime was so happy on 9-11.

Still, it makes me sick how many FReepers celebrate and joke about her death. snip
She made a stupid decision and died pointlessly. She bears the responsibility. Life is harsh, isn't it?

She was 23, unmarried, and likely never held a full-time job.

Who should be sued, and worse, is the organization that exploited her by putting her as a human shield in a war-zone.

the organization that exploited her
As far as I'm concerned, responsibility for her death goes in this descending order: 1)Rachel Corrie herself; 2)her disastrously misled and inept parents. The organization was an American anti-American group, wasn't it? [I'd almost forgotten that.]

"International Solidarity Movement"

There's a good inside look at how they work at this link:

We should not forget. Prosecute these enablers of terrorism.

There is a difference between hating the wrong and exulting in another human being's death. I clearly stated that she was wrong; and I certainly agree that she reaped what she had sown. I simply feel sad that some FReepers seem to feel happiness at her death. Jesus said he would seek out the lost lamb who strayed from the flock, not that He would be happy when the wolf ate the lost one.

There is a difference in indifference to another's death at their own hands and exulting in their death. No one here wished her dead or in anyway encouraged her death, but now when she dies like a moron we're supposed to feel bad? And how do you kbnow she was a "lost sheep?" Just being human does not put you in that catagory IMO.

Well, I think to a certain extent, being human makes us all lost sheep, since "All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God." She was seduced by a demon and lost, as all of us must who accede to evil. But Jesus came into the world specifically to save the sinful--and surely she ranks as such?

And not everyone on the thread seemed mocking, but some surely did--making fun and laughing at another human's downfall seems a little pathetic to me.

I agree; black humor is a way to deal with the unthinkable. And it is unthinkable to imagine a human being run over by a bulldozer. Just as it is unthinkable that a human being would strap plastique to themselves and incinerate dozens of other people. I am not excusing her. Actions have consequences, as I try to tell my children. The penalty for sin is death. But we all sin, and in different orders of magnitude. I think it is not impossible to recognize her sinfulness and yet feel compassion for how lost she was. That's all.

And how many of these people claim to be "compassionate conservatives" and "Christians". The hypocrisy is as astounding as it is sad.

Folks in my father's generation made similar fun of the Nazis - another enemy of free Jews.

Maybe the parents should sue Evergreen State University for brainwashing her into becoming a terrorist lackey.

They might also consider sueing themselves.

A little schizophrenic but I like it.

Jesus said he would seek out the lost lamb who strayed from the flock...

From the way she lived her life, it seems more likely she was one of the goats.
