Most of Mrs. Bush's humor at the correspondents' dinner was just right: Edgy but not over the edge. But I think the stripper and horse jokes were totally beneath her.
Just put it to the other-shoe test: If it were Teresa Heinz Kerry standing up on the dais telling the same jokes, the conservative commentariat would be buzzing for the rest of the year about what a tasteless skank she is.

They'll actually try and justify making the remarks too. I had this happen before with a certain individual who apparently took offense at someone being called a "bastard". Sure enough, a few posts up the same poster was calling people "hothead rednecks". Hypocrisy? What hypocrisy? If I do it, it's my right, but when you do it, you're being a holier-than-thou, Taliban-wing, prudish nutcase who is giving the entire GOP, the Conservative Movement, the world, and my mother a bad name. Oh, and naturally, today isn't nearly as good as the good old days were.
Glad to see I'm not the only one who doesn't think the sky is falling. Do you think I can corner the market on buquas before the Taliban takes this place over, by the way?
Having "lived in the country," or not having lived in the country. Having heard that "old joke," or not having heard that "old joke." None of that is a prerequisite for understanding that joke.
I grew up in the country. I got the joke.
And Michelle Malkin "got it" the same way I did.
No, it's not the worst thing in the world that Laura Bush told some lewd and tasteless jokes. It'll blow over and it won't be what GWB will be remembered for. But it might be what Laura is remembered for.
(If you doubt that, think about what Betty Ford is remembered for. Betty Ford too was a Republican president's wife who became a Media Darling ... because she defied that, oh, "prudish" or "priggish" or "uptight" conservative image. Betty Ford was "hip" and "with it." Yeah, baby.)
God, this is such BS! I never realized how many humorless, tight-assed, blue-nosed, a-holes were on FR. And until today, I liked Michelle Malkin. Hard to believe some guy in the stinking NYT gets it and so many "conservatives" don't have a single clue.
This is why Bill Clinton can have affairs and the Democrats defend the indefensible, but Newt Gingrich and Bob Livingston have to step down from their positions.
This is why Bill Bennett gets a bad rap for gambling, which is legal.
This is why the Left always excuses Democrat behavior but dwells on Republicans, because Democrats don't profess "family values" the way the Right does, so it's okay to anguish over Republicans but dismiss Democrats.
The people who are offended by the remarks have to realize that their "offense" is being manipulated by the Left to drive a wedge into the Right. The Left (IMHO) is not nearly as offended by the remarks as their editorializing would have you think.

The vast majority of "conservative Christians" had no problem with any of what Laura said.
That's why Dobson and Robertson and Bauer and even Pat Buchanan have chosen discretion.
Malkin's a granny, on her best day, so no surprise her nose is twisted out of joint.

"letting the First Lady do this"??? Since when are you in charge of what Laura Bush says? Since when is some "angry 74 year old evangelical gramdmother who called into Micheal Savage yesterday" in charge of Mrs. Bush?
I thought Laura was hilarious, and I wasn't offended by anything she said. But then I'm just one of those heathen, earthy, crude West Texas gals who understands the horse/cow joke and knows it has nothing to do with sex or beastiality - and the joke is about a hundred years old.
Having grown up all my life around ranchers, farmers, and truckers in my family, all the jokes seemed rather tame to me, and were hilarious because they were so absurd. Dollars to donuts, Laura has never seen "Desparate Housewives" and the thought of her going to Chippendale's is totally ludicrous - that's why it's so funny.
I just cannot get my mind around all the hysteria and histrionics about this. If people choose to be offended, so be it. When it comes to humor, to each his own - whatever floats your boat. But to read anything into this more than just a difference in opinion about humor to me is silly.

That was me. And there is no equivalency in the terms, especially when you and others were so sophomorically gleeful in labeling small children "bastards."

That's my experience as well. Some stuff is just funny because it's funny. Life is not a 24/7 church service.
And Laura's short comedy speech was funny, not only because it was so well-delivered. Self-deprecating humor is some of the funniest stuff out there, and she made fun of both herself and her husband along with a few other good friends.
I don't personally know of anyone who was offended by it. It wasn't a huge topic of conversation at the office, but all my conservative friends thought she was great.

I didn't really pay much attention to the jokes, and of course the horse joke was aimed at making fun of the city slickers. What bothers me in this debate is the savagrey aimed at those who disagree on the appropriateness of the content.
LOL!! I have seen you beating your head against a wall on a few threads about this. I think the very definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. Let's face it, you can't teach someone a sense of humor. I thought she was funny, and it still makes me chuckle when I think about the jokes. Ah, to be able to reference my mother in law as Don Corleone as a "joke"!! I use the quotations only for MY mother in law. Oh well, we get the humor in what she said and took it as just that.
I will admit if Hillary did it, I would still have thought it was funny. I just wouldn't have acknowledged it in public. :)
