Michelle Malkin: The Wonkette-ization of Laura Bush
Michelle Malkin ^ | May 3, 2005 | Michelle Malkin

Posted on 05/03/2005 2:10:11 PM PDT by EveningStar

Most of Mrs. Bush's humor at the correspondents' dinner was just right: Edgy but not over the edge. But I think the stripper and horse jokes were totally beneath her.

Just put it to the other-shoe test: If it were Teresa Heinz Kerry standing up on the dais telling the same jokes, the conservative commentariat would be buzzing for the rest of the year about what a tasteless skank she is.

Ironically, it's a case of undermoderating.

If only that were true. I think it was a case of the responsible party handing the keys over & saying: 'Here, you drive this thing.' I don't think it was a 'coup' at all but please don't expect me to splain the logic of the what I suspect transpired.

Humorless people bore me.

Well, you must bore yourself, then, because you are about as humorless as they come.

As I typed before (and who has the lack of reading comprehension?) I read some of the threads. And your hyperventilating is unwarranted. A few people were crass about Laura. Most who had criticisms were not. Seems as though you have overreacted bigtime. Especially bringing the Taliban into the issue. Ridiculous.

If that's the case then maybe it's time to take the keys back?

Apparently you're not reading enough. I saw a lot of things said about the first lady over the last few days that were absolutely repulsive.

Oh, come on. Michelle Malkin is a strong asset for the conservative movement. You may think she swung and missed this time. (Although I think she was on the mark!) However, her columns are most often accurate and well reasoned.

I guess you thought the First Lady was the 2nd coming of the Sainted Virgin Mary rather than an earthy Texas woman who apparently has a husband who is nuts about her. Pandering? Nah, having a good time. God knows she deserves one. And if it's in some faces here - too bad. It's many of the same ones who are constantly bashing the President for one reason or another.

Alkhin, you left out the last sentence. You're too stupid to live.

Palladin, I know you where mad at the time, but that's not up to your usual standards. No one deserves a comment like that.

In 'Hatari', John Wayne tells Red Buttons he'll never get milk for the baby elephant from that kind of goat. It's just a funny moment about a fish out of water. If Mrs. Bush had said that the horse didn't mind, then it would've been sexual and inappropriate. Every time I've heard this joke or a variation thereof, the operative phrase was "tried to milk". For me, the mental image is one of a very angry farm animal pounding the city dude into the ground, not of some bestial act!

As to Chippendales, the humor comes from the total unlikelihood of any of the ladies mentioned (yes, even Ginsburg) ever going near such 'entertainment'. Really, the sheer number of Secret Service people necessary to accompany all those ladies wouldn't leave enough room for a Chippendale to remove his hat. Do they wear hats?

I, for one, while at first a little startled at the Desperate Housewives joke,

IMO, she meant it only in a literal sense. She wasn't implying that she was capable of emulating the characters on the tv show.

But I digress. Laura Bush is an elegant, classy woman who knows her boundaries and does not need anyone to second guess her. I think all of this carrying on is nonsense.

Dear, your statement just made my day. You are on top of my Christmas list as of now!

Peach is correct. The far right has lost more than just one sympathetic to their cause. And judging from your response to Peach, you don't have a clue as to why.
A shame.

What an excellent commentary!

Of course, it was all about politics.

And it won't garner any increase in GW's popularity ratings.

I predict a negative effect.

Many people are just now reading the story, as it happened on the weekend, and many other news items pushed it out of the public consciousness. When it gets around in the Christian media, there will be a reaction.

It had nothing to do with politics. The entire PURPOSE of the dinner is for the president to get up and make fun of himself. Every president since Calvin Coolidge has attended. And what Christian media?

Yes, I take that back. I should not have answered in kind when she called me a predatory male looking for foxes, as a deliberate misinterpretation of the info in my profile.

Sorry, Alkhin. You really rang my bell and scored points with the howling wolfpack. Hope you enjoyed it.

You're not stupid. You usually choose your words carefully and this time you got the intended results.

Back to Hobbitland.

I don't see the new Pope denouncing her jokes.

In German, horses are neuter (das Pferd) so the joke didn't make sense.
