the real point to be made about these jokes is not how people personally feel about them - everyone is entitled to their own opinion of course, and have different levels of what they accept as humor.

the real point is that we should have recognized that SOME people who vote with us, object to this. Like that angry 74 year old evangelical grandmother who called into Michael Savage yesterday. And we have a slim majority in this country, we can't afford to be p**sing off people over nonsense like this dumb dinner. what do we have to gain by letting the first lady do this? nothing, there is no upside, only a downside. politically, its not a positive for our side.

I lived in upstate NY until I was 14 and vacated there until I was 22.

The joke around the Adirondecks, told in ALL company including children, is about the NYC city slicker who came to farm country upstate and couldn't tell the difference between a horse and a cow.

Who doesn't know that "some people who vote with us" object to every single thing on the face of the earth?

You said........SOME people who vote with us, object to this. Like that angry 74 year old evangelical grandmother who called into Michael Savage yesterday.

Excuse me, but NO evangelical 74 woman would EVER listen to Michael Savage..he's as crude as they come, so I think she must have been a liberal seminar caller.

Now, having said that, I WINCED at the Horse joke and when she said SHE was a desparate Housewife. I thought everything else was GREAT!

When I was very small I learned that you can't please everyone. It's obviously a lesson that needed more exposure.

"letting the First Lady do this"??? Since when are you in charge of what Laura Bush says? Since when is some "angry 74 year old evangelical gramdmother who called into Micheal Savage yesterday" in charge of Mrs. Bush?

Sounds good—Except there was a huge political upside. A HUGE one. I posted my perspective on it in my first official freeper post on one of these "Laura makes everyone crazy" threads.

One can not lead, as Bill Clinton so eloquently illustrated for us, if you stand around all day worrying about offending someone. In the long run, everyone will be offended and only your greatest weakness will be left for all to ponder because you never had the courage to do what was right.

Speaking as one who loved Laura's routine, I just realized that what bothers me the most is the fact that some of those with whom I agree on many, many issues are appearing to be exactly what the left has described them as—Petty, small minded and judgmental. I don't like it.

To those I disagree with: Be disappointed or even aghast. But please, please don't cast Laura out as a "whore" or a "slut" because of it. It cheapens the whole notion of a whore or a slut. I imagine you as the people who stood in the corner whispering in dismay when Jesus allowed Mary Magdalene to wash his feet with perfume at a banquet. After all...it was sooo inappropriate. Never mind that a real life human connection was taking place. Kind of like what happened between the presstwits and Laura and George Saturday night.

"LETTING the First Lady do this"??? She is her own woman. She would never consciously do anything to harm her husband or her political party. But we do not have the right to tell her what to do. What she does is between her and her husband. He is the person we elected, not her. She does not have to answer to us.

Her jokes gained more votes than they lost.
