Man Arrested For Stomping Geese To Death Says He Felt Threatened

POSTED: 9:05 am EDT May 9, 2005

ATTLEBORO, Mass. -- A man who allegedly stomped a Canada goose and its five goslings to death in Massachusetts this weekend is in court Monday on animal cruelty charges.

John Sanders says he's "heartbroken" over the incident. He tells The Boston Globe he felt threatened because the geese were acting aggressively and moving toward him, hissing and beating their wings.

Police say Sanders, an industrial engineer from Rhode Island, slipped and fell in mud after an adult goose hissed at him.

According to the police report, Sanders got up angry and went into a rampage, chasing and kicking the geese.

Sounds like someone needs some anger management classes.

I agree. I would not do such a thing, but PETA is out of control. Animals are just animals remember.

I'm guessing what got this guy started off was being startled and falling in the mud. He should have just grabbed them and deprived them of food and water for about 15 days. That way, it would have been perfectly legal to kill them.

What a pussy.
Geese can't hurt you if your over three or four years old.

Not anymore. Animals are "companions."

I come from the day that one's companion is one's unmarried tootsie.

This is so sad. I love Canadian Geese (I just wish they had the sense to be from somewhere else). We have a pond in our back yard and sometimes when I'm outback I am lucky enough to see a flight of them glide in and land on the water. On occasion it actually brings tears to my eyes because they are so very beautiful and graceful in flight.

I couldn't disagree more. Canadian geese are vermin, crapping all over every park where children play (by law they generally cannot be chased away), attacking people Story and creating a public nuisance.

The best idea I have heard is to license hunters to thin their flocks and give the carcasses to organizations that feed the homeless. Canadian geese would finally be of some use.

Time to do something about those damned Canadain Geese.

They are messy, noisy and crap all over the yard.

A Pellet gun shot to the head would have been more apropriate instead of kicking the heck out of them.

Dunno about Canada geese, but I got nailed by a domestic goose when I was 14.......they bite like hell and it hurt.

BTW, domestic geese were used to protect the homestead in 16th -17th century Europe.

They are some mean bastards.

I gotta agree the guy isn't all there, but I have a big problem with him getting arrested for it.

IMO, it doesn't warrant more than a ticket for littering, and the cop should give him the choice to not get the ticket if he cleans up the mess.

I can attest to their aggressiveness, but stomping them to death might be a bit over the edge..... Especially the little ones. The big ones will protect the little ones to the death I think.

Geese can be mean by nature. We had some at our ranch and they were the best "watchdogs" we ever had. My uncle picked one up and was chasing me with it, and when he got up close to my butt, the goose reached out and bit me. LOL I think my pride was hurt worse than the bite. :) Needless to say, I was afraid of them from that time on.

Hearing a shotgun blast and then seeing them fall, wings stilled forever before they splat on the water brings tears of joy to MY eyes.

They are crap machines and restrictions on hunting them has resulted in overpopulation and acres of filth on area beaches and parks.

I went to a lakeside park for Mothers Day that I haven't been to in several years. Used to be you could walk along the lake and enjoy the view.

Not anymore. Since the Geese moved in, walking along the lakeside is like walking through a minefield. I've never seen so much sh*t in my life. My Wife and I finally got tired of dodging the goosepies and just went back to the picnic area.

Sounds like you and I would get along nicely.

Those who don't hunt waterfowl, may never know the joy of which you speak.

I absolutely LOVE it!

...there is something wrong with a guy that stomps baby geese to death because he is scared of them.

Agreed. He tried to flee but it I hear it is very hard to run in high heels. He should have just hit them with his purse.
