Police: Man Set Girlfriend On Fire

Helen Clark Finch Has Burns On 80 Percent Of Her Body

POSTED: 5:18 pm CDT May 18, 2005

MILWAUKEE -- Milwaukee police are searching for a man they said set his girlfriend on fire early Wednesday morning.

Witnesses rushed to save the woman who emerged from her south side apartment in flames at about 12:45 a.m. Wednesday.

"She was just burning. She was actually burning from head to toe. Burning, on fire," neighbor Carla King said. "When I came out, she was laying out here burning."

King said her neighbor, Helen Clarkfinch, was rolling down the hallway ripping her clothes off, screaming at the top of her lungs.

"We took a fire extinguisher, put her out and called 911," King said.

At the same time, witnesses said, the woman's boyfriend, Tommy Wells, was running out of the building -- screaming for her to burn.

"He was saying yesterday (Tuesday) he was going to get her, but he always used to tell us he was going to get her, and whatever, but actually it really happened this time," neighbor Toya Jones said.

Neighbors said the 50-year-old woman they all called, "mama," and her boyfriend argued often, usually accusing the other of cheating and usually while under the influence of alcohol.

"You know they'd argue, but then next thing you know they're kissing and hugging. So I didn't think this was serious," King said.

Why women stay with men like this is a mystery to me.

That's easy. One can't afford to buy; the other isn't steady enough to pour without spilling...and nobody else will have either one of them.
