Elder Bush Would like Son Jeb to Run for President

George Bush, the president's father, would like to see another Bush in the White House someday, saying on Tuesday that he would want his son Jeb to run for president when the timing is right.

Florida Governor Jeb Bush has repeatedly said he does not plan to run for president in 2008, trying to dampen speculation that another Bush could be on the next Republican ticket for the White House.

In an interview on CNN's "Larry King Live," former President Bush said he would want Jeb to run for president "someday," but now was not the time.

"The timing's wrong. The main thing is, he doesn't want to do it. Nobody believes that," Bush said.

But he and wife Barbara both said they believed Jeb, 52, did not want to run in the next presidential race.

Bush said he did not have a favorite candidate for the Republican nomination to succeed his son, President Bush.

Barbara Bush said she believed Senator and former first lady Hillary Rodham Clinton would be the Democratic nominee in the 2008 presidential race. "I'm not going to vote for her, but I'm betting on her," she said.

Someone who won't be voting for Jeb Bush. Or anyone else.

"if Powell ran, he would win 40+ states."

Sorry. I just don't see that happening. Tell me what issues his campaign would be based on.

Oh shut up!!!!

I've been posting here for many years. That's the first time I've been told that. You may not like it but there are people like me that think human life is so precious that saving it transcends something like the rule of a judge.

"he has the highest approval rating of any prominent republican."

But you didn't answer my question. Why do you think he has the highest approval rating? Do you have a source for stats?

I totally disagree. I have nothing against Jeb - I don't know him. He just seems a lot more like his dad .. and we don't need another Bush-lite in the WH - not right now.

Enough with the Constitutional amendments.

Agreed, including amendments that define words and prohibit protest.

Amendments limiting the presidency are undemocratic.

There're a lot of amendments on the "repeal" list before the two-term 26th. If you'll remember, that amendment was enacted as a result of a rabid socialist who destroyed the notions of federalism, limited government, and individual freedom in our republic.

That's just great. Lots of Republicans are really eager to vote for someone who will happily Balkanize us further...

Condi vs. Hillary - Now that would be a fun race to watch.

That would be a dumb play for Republicans. Hillary's biggest weakness is her complete lack of experience, and her controversial background. You want to counter that by putting up someone with a long and well established record in public office. We should be looking for a solid Republican governor to run against Hillary; Jeb would have been ideal; but, he screwed up on the Schiavo mess, and he has the wrong last name; either of which can kill off his chances.

Agree with you all around, however, I CAN see Jeb beating Hillary. I'm a NYer and I cannot see Pataki or Guiliani having a chance against her. I don't think Hillary is a good choice for the Dems, but the media will propel her and the dummies will support her.

"Your expectations were much lower then mine. I had expected, that as a Republican, he would have been a conservative rather then a socialist."

I'm just curious: Did you consider Ronald Reagan to be a conservative? If you did, then use Reagan's actual policies (not rhetoric) on taxes, deficits, trade, immigration, terrorism, the military, abortion/life issues, and so on, to explain why he was more of a conservative than President Bush.

Jeb would be 59 in 2012. His window of opportunity would be closing. I think he would be clobbered if he tried to run in 2008. He knows this and is staying out.
