Denver Pit Bull Owners in a Panic Over Ban

DENVER - A few weeks ago, two police cars and two animal control vehicles pulled up at the home of Stef'ny Steffan looking for her beloved 4-year-old pit bull, Xena. Seven officers hauled the animal off to the city shelter, putting her on death row. Xena became an outlaw after Denver won a court fight and reinstated one of the toughest pit-bull bans in the nation.

Since May, more than 380 dogs have been impounded and at least 260 destroyed — an average of more than three a day.

Dog owners are in a panic. Some are using an underground railroad of sorts, sending their pets to live elsewhere or hiding them from authorities. City officials would not estimate how many people might be violating the ordinance.

Some owners, like Steffan, have won a reprieve for their pets with help from a rescue group. The group got Xena released by signing an affidavit stating that the animal would never return to Denver. The group took the dog to Mariah's Promise in Divide, an animal sanctuary that has accepted more than three dozen pit bulls from Denver.

For Steffan and her partner, Gina Black, leaving Xena 60 miles from home was a lousy option but the only one they had.

"It's safer than animal control. Safer than keeping her underground — at least she'll be able to play now," Steffan said. "But she'll miss us. We're her pack."

Denver is one of three major metropolitan areas, along with Miami and Cincinnati, to ban pit bulls, according to Glen Bui, vice president of the American Canine Foundation.

Pit bull typically describes three kinds of dogs — the American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier and the Staffordshire Bull Terrier. But Denver's ban applies to any dog that looks like a pit bull. The animal's actual behavior does not matter.

City Councilman Charlie Brown said that in his judgment, "pit bulls are trained to attack. They're bred to do that."

Critics of the ban use words like "annihilation" and "genocide," and the city shelter has received e-mails likening animal control officers to Nazis.

"Breed bans are just a knee-jerk reaction to something that happened in the community," Bui said.

Denver banned pit bulls in 1989 after dogs mauled a minister and killed a boy in separate attacks. The Legislature passed a law in 2004 that prohibited breed-specific bans, but the city sued and a judge ruled in April the law was an unconstitutional violation of local control.

Critics of the ordinance say that a blanket ban on an entire breed is misguided that the law should instead target irresponsible owners and all dangerous dogs.

"If anyone says one dog is more likely to kill — unless there's a study out there that I haven't seen — that's not based on scientific data," said Julie Gilchrist, a doctor at the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention who researches dog bites.

The CDC, the American Veterinary Medical Association and the Humane Society of the United States examined 20 years of dog-bite data and concluded that pit bulls and Rottweilers caused the most deaths.

But the researchers also noted that fatal attacks represent a small proportion of dog-bite injuries and that the number of bites per breed simply seems to rise with their popularity.

At the city shelter, pit bulls are cordoned off from other dogs in what has become death row. Nearly 100 pit bulls have been released to live outside the county. A nonresident must guarantee the dog will never return to Denver.

Sonya Dias, who is moving out of Denver because of the ban, said she was a little intimidated by her pit bull when she first saw him. But "when I said, `Hey little doggie,' his whole body just started wagging." Gryffindor is staying at Mariah's Promise until Dias sells her home.

"He's been dangerous to a couple of pairs of shoes and some mini-blinds," Dias said. "But otherwise he's a jewel."

"While living in Chicago i often saw young punks parading down the street with pits. Making up for their lack of manhood."

Now there's a great reason to ban something....I've seen balding, fat middle aged guys driving Porsches, Ferraris and Lambos for the same reason. Ban them, too? They were designed to go faster than the legal speed limit anyways...who needs a car that will go 3-4 times faster than the legal speed limit? These cars were clearly designed with the intent of breaking the law. < / sarcasm>

I believe I am correct in stating that their jaws lock when they bite. I think that is one of the big concerns in that you can't get them off someone.

No... that's not true, it's a myth... their jaws don't lock, their minds do. They don't give up under pressure. They were bred for tenacity.

First go the Pit Bulls...back to Rottweilers, then Dobermans, German Shepherds,Cane Corsos,Mastiffs,American Bulldogs,Ovcharcas,Caucasians,Filas,Dogo Argentinas, Dogo Canarius,Presa Canarius,Alsatians,Malinois, etc etc etc..

Each time bad guys will simply pick another breed to abuse
and make mean and anti social..resulting in the government
stealing private property to protect a few of their statist
loving enablers...

Guns arent far behind..and the government and the press will
always come up with so called faux legit reasons that those whose
ox is not being gored and who are too cowardly to protest
for their brothers sake will sit idly by and ascend to...until eventually it will be their turn in the barrel and there will be no one to help them.

imo

You don't know much about Pits or American Staffordshires or you would not be making such broad sweeping statements.

All pits are no more raised to kill than are roosters.

You are very wrong.

I'm sorry, but the most violent, territorial dog I've ever known was a chow/lab mix. We got him when he was just 6 months old and he developed the temper about 2 months later. We treated him right and he was fine with us, but God save anyone who knocked on the door. There was something seriously wrong with this animal's brain. I finally took him to the pound and insisted that they put him down directly. He was a danger to everyone. Breed bans are horrible, wrong and closed-minded.

It's the equivalent of banning homeschool because there are a handful of parents who use it as an excuse to hide their abuse. It's the same as banning horses because they *might* trample a child to death or hot water heaters because they *may* malfunction and get too hot.

There are no guarantees of safety with any dog... but IMHO, the risk is much greater with a dog who was created, refined and bred to fight other dogs to the death, than it is with any companion breed.

*This* argument I can understand. If a poodle snaps at a kid, the odds are that the damage won't be too bad. If a Rot or a Pit snaps, it wouldn't take much to kill a kid.

If we're going to ban pit bulls...blah blah blah

Look. Where I live you can't have chickens. They're livestock. And a public nuisance. Don't like it move to a farm. Likewise you can't own a Bengal tiger in City Limits.

Dogs are what their owners make them. A well trained dog no matter what breed is mans best friend. A dog with no training or the wrong training can be hell on Earth. The same can be said of children.

That's interesting. The people that I bought my house from had that same mix (chow and lab) and their dogs were both psychos.

If your car is hit by an SUV you are far more likely to be injured than if you are hit by another passenger car...

....it's still liberal thinking.

No. Guns don't fire themselves. Pit bulls do attack without warning.

There is a large movement underway to try to breed a purer strain of both American Pit Bull and American Staffordshire...which are considered the same by some clubs.

The purebred breeders as a rule absolutely loathe fighting their dogs.

The latest movement in pit bull dimensions is a lower, heavier and bulldog faced style....all of which do not really lend itself to pit fighting.

anyone who has seen pitbull fighting tapes on Pit Bull rescue sites would immediately seen that most pit bulls used for fighting are rangier and more terrier faced for a better bite.

There is an element of thug culture that adores these dogs much like neo-Nazis adore Dobies, Alsatians, and Rotts but that is not a good enough reason to ban them. That said culture like guns and 20 inch rims...let's outlaw them too

I adore them myself. They are great family pets if bought from a reputable breeder and raised by a proper owner or family.

They are the original American dog to a large degree and have been the pets of many notables since our founding.

As for children. I would never leave a large territorial male dog alone with small children period. That is simply foolish.

I have been raised with and raised Shepherds, Rotts and Dobies and I intend to buy a quality Pit as my next dog since our beloved red Dobie died 18 months ago.

Some freepers are emo-winnies.

I disagree. Only an idiot owns a pit bull. A person's right to own one is trumped by everyone else's right not to be mauled to death.

Guns do not kill people, people do. Pit bulls have mauled and killed many, with no human helping them.

Get a life.
Bad drivers should lose their license, not because they're old or young but because they're bad.
Bad gun owners should lose their rights by being made felons, but not because they're gun owners.
Bad dog owners should lose their right to own/train/breed any type of dog, not because they were mistreating a particular breed.
Particular breeds of dog should be recognized for their own worth and not because some punk wanted cheap status, or because some wuss came up with a simple 'solution' good only until the punks elected another status symbol.

Problem is, junking a car, trashing a SW model 41, or confiscating a drug runner's house does not kill something that never got to make a choice.
Maybe you're old enough to remember when German Sheperds were 'evil', Dobies were 'evil' and a pit bull starred in popular kid's flicks...maybe not.

What's your opinion on the best way to deal with pregnant Coke heads?

PS: Yes I live with a pit bull & a mixed little fluffy and sort of ditzy terrier, they are pals.
And no, I don't have a mod 41, but I DO have about 15 other nice .22s.

PPS: Pray that your chihuaua never tries to nip me.
