If this is true, this is a very sad end to a gentleman who had a very promising career. Mr. Teele was on my page of "distingushed Black Republicans" (currently in storage pending future posting). Prayers for Mr. Teele and his family.

This is a tragedy. Although corruption is deplorable, no one should take any joy in Teel's suicide.

The local media is doing the standard ambulance chase with the helicopter routine

"...This is your Channel 7 action news reporter here and we are currently hovering in a helicopter over an ambulance that is headed to the hospital. That's right, it is headed for the hospital folks. And there it is, just 1,500 feet below us. It's taking a left turn now, that's right, taking a left turn and it is now proceeding STRAIGHT down Clarendon Street.

Please stay tuned as Channel 7 continues this nonstop coverage of an ambulance as it apparently heads to the local hospital. As you can see, the ambulance is in traffic, that's right folks, it is IN traffic and apparently enroute to the St. Elizabeth's Hospital on the corner of Pleasant and Vine Streets. The ambulance is now stopped at a red light and it is apparently about to make a right turn onto Galloway Road which would put it directly on course to St. Elizabeth's Hospital. This coverage is being brought to you by Channel 7 News..."

The following article from the Miami New Times contains transcripts of police reports, wire taps, and video surveillance. Mr. Teele led a double life.

Tales of Teele: Sleaze Stories
Male prostitutes and multiple mistresses, drug money in Gucci shopping bags, bribery and extortion conspiracies. And you thought you'd heard it all about Art Teele.

Art Teele is a man of very big appetites, and because of them he is now in very big trouble. As the investigative report below indicates, the once-powerful politician is possessed of a seemingly insatiable craving for all things illicit -- adulterous sex, illegal drugs, bribery and extortion.

Three weeks ago the U.S. Attorney charged Teele with 26 counts of mail fraud, wire fraud, and money laundering -- all arising from schemes at Miami International Airport. Those allegations followed earlier criminal charges brought by the Miami-Dade State Attorney's Office. On March 2, Teele was convicted of threatening a police officer after confronting undercover cops who were shadowing him as part of the corruption investigation reprinted here, which resulted in ten felony counts of unlawful compensation. An October trial date has been set in that case.

[snip]

The CRA hired numerous personnel through A-1-A [Employment] Agency with questionable backgrounds and dubious duties. One particular employee, Catricia Alphonse, has a prior arrest record for prostitution and is a dancer at the Goldrush club. One of her stated functions within the CRA was to count taxicabs in the area of the Goldrush club.

Pierre stated that she was instructed to hire Catricia Alphonse by Commissioner Arthur Teele in order to help with the Clarin Lakay Little Haiti Art Exhibit.

[snip]

According to F. Davis, once they arrived at the motel, "Art" gave him $50 to rent the room and instructed him to cover the doorway light so he could enter the room without being illuminated. He stated that once they were in the room, "Art" asked him if he had any cocaine. F. Davis told him that he did not; however, he was able to contact his friend "Peaches," who brought an "eight ball" of cocaine, which "Art" paid $180 for. F. Davis said that his friend did not see "Art" because he left immediately after delivering the cocaine to him at the door. F. Davis added that while they were waiting for the cocaine, "Art" drank a bottle of white Zinfandel wine while he watched pornographic movies on the television.

F. Davis said that they used the cocaine and he performed oral sex...

And now, in keeping with Channel 40's policy of always bringing you the latest in blood and guts, in living color, you're about to see another first - an attempted suicide.

Famous last words of TV anchorwoman Chris Chubbock as she took out a pistol and shot herself on the air on July 15th 1974. She lived for 14 more hrs

Are you watching Channel 7? The local TV station just ran the tape of the ambulance and the anchorette read from your transcript. You could be a news director.

Btw, Teele is dead.

An excerpt from an article by Jim deFede (the same journalist now at the Miami Herald that he left a message for to tell his wife he loved her just before he put the gun in his mouth. ( Originally published by Miami New Times 1996-08-22 and found at: http://www.miaminewtimes.com/Issues/1996-08-22/news/columns_print.html)

....Upon graduating from Florida A&M University in 1967 with a degree in political science, Teele, an ROTC cadet, joined the U.S. Army as a lieutenant and was shipped off to Vietnam. In September 1968, he suffered shrapnel wounds to his left leg and was awarded a Purple Heart. Teele also earned a Meritorious Service Medal and two Bronze Stars, including one for valor. He was also promoted to captain. After his tour in Vietnam, Teele remained in the service and attended Florida State University's law school as part of an army-sponsored program to produce attorneys for the military. He graduated in 1972 and was transferred to Korea, where he became the Second Infantry Division's chief prosecutor; he tried cases of murder, rape, and other major felonies. He finished his military career as senior aide and chief counsel to Lt. Gen. Henry Emerson, commander of the 18th Airborne Corps.

Following Teele's honorable discharge from the army in 1976, Emerson, a Republican, introduced his former aide to the GOP hierarchy in Washington. Even this son of liberal Democrats could see the opportunities being offered him: Teele promptly declared himself a Republican.

In his resignation letter to the army, Teele stated he was leaving the armed forces to pursue a private law practice in Florida. But in truth he was less interested in practicing law than in making money, filled as he was with entrepreneurial spirit. In the late Seventies and early Eighties, he owned two small, black-oriented newspapers (the Capital Outlook in Tallahassee and the Daytona Times), and a pair of radio stations (WJAX in Jacksonville and WRIF in Detroit) and eventually sold them all for a profit.

Throughout this time, Teele was active in Republican politics and fought hard for Ronald Reagan's candidacy in 1980. His reward: a presidential appointment in 1981 to take over the Urban Mass Transit Administration. Two years later he left the Reagan Administration, a newly credentialed expert in transportation matters, on the prowl for his next business opportunity....
