LAUREN BACALL: 'VULGAR' TOM CRUISE IS NOT A GREAT ACTOR
Drudge Report ^ | 07-31-05 | WestVirginiaRebel

Posted on 07/31/2005 1:30:02 PM PDT by WestVirginiaRebel

NEW YORK-Lauren Bacall tells TIME Tom Cruise is not a great actor. "When you talk about a great actor, you're not thinking about Tom Cruise," Bacall says.

"His whole behavior is so shocking. It's inappropriate and vulgar and absolutely unacceptable to use your private life to sell anything commercially, but I think it's a kind of sickness."

Sorry but "Granny" ruined that for me.

You're thinking of Irene Ryan.

You can go back even farther and the actual "private" behaviors, now made known, would shock people; even by today standards.

The BIG difference, is that until the STUDIO SYSTEM was done away with, actors and actresses were taught how to dress, move, behave in public, and were protected by the studios. Sometimes, even the studios couldn't keep the most egregious behavior out of the public eye, but that was rare.

Actors and actresses of bye gone times didn't go out in public, looking like slobs, as they do today. Their interviews were very well scripted, with reporters being told exactly what they could ask and what they couldn't. Sure, it was FAKE, but it really was better that their BAD side was kept from the public; for everyone involved.

Until the twenties, actors and actresses, from the time of ancient Greece and Rome, had ALWAYS been been viewed as filth and looked down upon, even when some were lauded for their skill and prominence.

Well, I suppose in most cases, it would depend on the situation.

I spent more than just a brief meeting, and the Lady I met was gracious, and friendly. On set, she was an absolute pro, and expected all of us to be the same.

There were more than just a few occasions she could have displayed what you described, and she didn't.

Talking to her, it was obvious she was strong willed and opinionated, all in all, my time around her was excellent.

So, we'll have to agree to disagree on her.

I have watched Rainman and Jerry Maguire many times on t.v. Is it an accident that his straight man routine earns Oscars for his co-stars? I don't think so. In Jerry Maguire there are several brilliant scenes in which he must show a range of emotions, shaded carefully and believably all the way through. Cruise is far more capable as an actor than he is as a human being. In acting, he freely exercises his emotions, whereas under the control of Scientology, his range is quite restricted.

Isn't it ironic that the woman who sang that is gay?

Agreed - IMHO, Johnny Depp is a far superior actor (even though I disagree with his "America sucks" politics)

That shows that the natural approach to mental health does not work in many cases.

Well golly, I don't know. After they dehydrated her to death I guess her mental problems were gone, weren't they?

The "natural" approach doesn't work for chemical imbalances.

When psychiatry prescribes Ritalin to 10-12% of our boys between 6-14.....then something has failed in their system.

Nope. This is our self-centered society that doesn't want to be parents and teachers and deal with children. They want good little automatons who don't bother them. Psychiatrists simply filled the "need". Mommy can't deal with Johnny and have a life too so she takes him to the doctor to find out what's "wrong" with him and the doctor responds by drugging Johnny.

So where does Debora Kerr fall in the pantheon af actresses with grace and "class"? How about Grace Kelly? (OK, maybe not a great actress but...)

The man is flying high and feels compelled to voice his opinion on normally taboo subjects.

So what?

His acting is flawless.

You want to witness really bad acting, go and watch Keanu Reeves. Tom Cruise is an ace...and still has a lot of roles in him. He's young.

Grace Kelly was the best looking women ever filmed. She shows up number one. Lauren has some really good lines. "You know how to whistle don't you Steve. You just put your lips together and blow."

Tom is just a goof that big money producers use as insurance on big money films. They need someone in an action film so guys can bring their girlfriends without getting bored. But you can't really take him seriously.

Hollywood has always been a dead-letter office for unfulfilled dreams; sometimes the tooth-fairy comes along and Santa Claus' sleigh picks her up at the curb.

Yeah ... if they stick around long enough, they'll get used to it. Then one day, it will all make sense.

BTW, I think Jeff Daniels is one of the most under-rated actors alive.
