LAUREN BACALL: 'VULGAR' TOM CRUISE IS NOT A GREAT ACTOR
Drudge Report ^ | 07-31-05 | WestVirginiaRebel

Posted on 07/31/2005 1:30:02 PM PDT by WestVirginiaRebel

NEW YORK-Lauren Bacall tells TIME Tom Cruise is not a great actor. "When you talk about a great actor, you're not thinking about Tom Cruise," Bacall says.

"His whole behavior is so shocking. It's inappropriate and vulgar and absolutely unacceptable to use your private life to sell anything commercially, but I think it's a kind of sickness."

When 10-12% of boys in the US are on Ritalin......that calls this area of Psychiatry into serious question. The US is the only country doing this on a massive scale.

That doesn't call psychiatry into question. That calls the United States into question. Presumably, these other countries that do not overuse Ritalin also have psychiatrists, no?

You left out "Rain Man." : )

Oh, sarcasm!

On a serious note, you reminded me what it was that made that movie so great -- Dustin Hoffman. He was outstanding.

a reminder of an era when Hollywood had class.

Gimme a break. Hollywood was as decadent and immoral in the 50s as they are now.

Those parents TRUST those psychiatrists and counselors that this stuff is safe and that it is a normal practice.

Bunk. There are parents who don't CARE what their kids take as long as they leave them alone. Any kid that I knew that was on Ritalin got it from the family GP not a counselor or shrink. Schools also push it because if Johnny acts up in class, the teacher has no idea how to deal with it and if they do, Johnnys parents complain cause Johnny was "mistreated". Parents rely on drugging their kids because caring for them and disciplining them take too much time away from their own lives. This is the "me" society and shrinks just stepped into the demand. If you don't believe me, go read DU and some of their threads about all the drugs they take themselves. We don't WANT to work on a problem, we want a magic pill to make it go away.

That shows that the natural approach to mental health does not work in many cases.

Also, he starred in 'Cocktail,' 'Days of Thunder,' 'Losin It,' 'Young Guns' and 'Endless Love.'

Cruise wasn't in Young Guns. Maybe it was a movie with a similar title?

I don't know...it doesn't seem becoming for actors to talk about other actors like that. Lauren Bacall had a nasty reputation at one point. This is the second time she's been catty about younger actors (She made snide comments about Nicole Kidman). I don't think it's "classy" to talk about your peers in public. But that's just me.

Unlike the few exceptions ( Hume Cronyn, Franchot Tone, Humphrey Bogart, Katherine Hepburn, Betty Davis, Oliver Hardy,Jean Harlow, Charlton Heston, and Audrey Hepburn for example),the vast majority of modern day actors and actresses, from the earliest movies on down, came from the lower middle class to the abject lowest of the low. And their behavior, when more or less out of the public view, was far worse than that of their fans.

And yes, even in the '40s and '50s, that was true! The public was kept in the dark. You're absolutely wrong and completely uninformed about the seedier side of Hollywood history.

The movies were certainly better. And for the most part, stars kept their private lives (and their beliefs) to themselves.

No, she isn't, but she is right about Cruise.

Well, here's the neuropsychiatric explanation (one possibility): as people get older the neurons in their brain start breaking down with weaker serotonin and dopamine functioning. The result? Less self-control, greater flippancy and bluntness. Things people ordinarily would not have said start coming out. In the more severe cases, something almost like Tourette's occurs with poopoo jokes, naughty sexual innuendo, etc. More than likely Tom has a fitness exercise program, vitamin ideas, and mental mind game yoga to suggest for "curing" this. You knew here in a professional sense. I knew her ( peripherally, but in the flesh and up close and personal, with her in her underwear ) as she was when NOT working. And I saw her and sadly heard her, for YEARS.

LOL...you're probably right about the age thing. And since Betty's been "outspoken" before about other actors, interviewers probably try to provoke her.

Grace Kelly was a beauty, but I've always been partial to Maureen O'Hara.

Grace Kelly's private behavior was NOT "classy", even though she came from an upper middle class background. She just looked "classy".
