I suppose this kind of loss of law and order could happen anywhere. But I'm beginning to think that the south is really different from other parts of the country.

Could happen any where in the world. Depends on the right combination of circumstances.

Anyone watching CNN? A crowd of folks flipping off the camera and shouting "Fu*k Nagin!"

The video was unedited.

That remark is completely uncalled for and only shows your ignorance.

Because of this? Sadly there are a number of major cities in the U.S. that would respond this way given these or similar circumstances.

(Unfortunately the terrorists are taking notes.)

I think that this is a different situation than most natural disasters. When we have an earthquake in CA everybody's still here. In NO right now you have three groups:

Very, very poor,
Infirmed,
Criminals

I feel bad for the poor, and worse for the infirmed. My thought last night was that we should get them out and nuke the city.

I don't think it's a Southern thing as much as it is a big-city thing. New Orleans has always had a high violent crime rate, a corrupt and largely ineffective police department and government, and grinding poverty. Put the three together, mix in a Category 4 hurricane and some abysmal planning by local and state leaders, and you get this.

Not to pick on Detroit, but do you really think it'd be that much different if some sort of similar disaster could hit Detroit? Or, say, Philadelphia or Baltimore? Or St. Louis?

Been to Detroit lately? Same thing, just no flooding and no media coverage.

The risk of civil unrest is more a city by city, and neighborhood by neighborhood issue. NOLA had more than its fair share of thugs.

But I'm beginning to think that the south is really different from other parts of the country. It is different. That's why I love it so.

This could happen in any metropolitan area in our country, and might be worse. It ain't a Southern thang.

This is an urban problem. The rest of the state and south is NOT like that.

I live at ground zero for Charley, Frances and Jeanne in central Florida. We are southern and we didn't have this kind of lawlessness or looting. Please refrain from stereotyping. Thanks
