If OUR MONEY, via Federal money, has to rebuild this entire city..........then it would be FAIR to insist that it be rebuilt in an area that is NOT at such terrific odds with nature. Amen.
Turn the bowl into a park.
Lake New Orleans Memorial State Park - located next to New New Orleans.

Bah. It is only a housing project. They usually catch fire 1 week after they cut the ribbon.

I DO agree that "rebuilding" N.O. should not be done automatically, and without real consideration as to whether it is a wise thing to do. I agree. Anyone who moves back into NO if it's rebuilt at the same negative elevation is too slow a learner. Best way to educate them: tell them that beginning in 2010, the govt will no longer provide any assistance to people who live on coasts that are routinely hit by hurricanes. Smart people will decide to move inland.

It happened in Cleveland once...
Actually it happened in Cleveland four or five times and in most other riverside industrial cities as well. The 1969 fire was probably the smallest, but the MSM was looking for a new anti-business story and it was photogenic.

I voted for Bush 2x...But he is doing a horrible job at least on the PR side of this. Where the hell is the Navy and the rest of the relief. I have been reading for over a day they are on there way. What is taking so long? We have invaded countries quicker..
To: American Quilter
They should just start building new levees further inland and let the lake claim all that is underwater now. It will never be rebuilt, and should just be considered all lost now.

The "Apocalypse" is now playing in New Orleans.
Coming soon to cities everywhere.
That's a pretty sick thing to say...not a shred of evidence but plenty of hopeful possibility eh?

How long until somebody declares Katrina to be God's Allah's judgement upon New Orleans?

I remember he was on the ball two days before had ordered emerg. crews, etc. to be put in place. Then, it seemed to all fall apart. I am not sure where the blame lies...but certainly things were in place for emergency care ... tents, etc. for the tsunami victims much faster than things have been done in NO and other Gulf areas. I remember the pictures of those "tent cities" errected in two days. Can't figure out why that has not been done yet.

Some of the states have leadership that will do what is necessary to stop riots. Lousiana just isn't one of them.
Considering the party in charge there, one might think they don't want to shoot looters because they don't want to lose voters. But it's not like death means disenfranchisement or anything down there.

Best way to educate them: tell them that beginning in 2010, the govt will no longer provide any assistance to people who live on coasts that are routinely hit by hurricanes.Better yet, cut off all government assistance in these types of disaster situations, except perhaps what's absolutely necessary to rescue people from imminent danger. The responsibility should be on people to buy insurance, or make whatever other arrangements they need to be prepared for (or avoid) a disaster.

Google news search shows nothing
Dittoes...nothing. Nothing at Fox either.
This "fire story" sounds like a case of those who thrive on desperation.

I don't think they can get organized that fast. I won't elaborate on what all they could do. But they've had four years to think something up. And the US still has 1000's of strategic soft targets.

Not the National Guard as it is busy elsewhere.
