Racism charges swirl in Congress amid chaos
The Washington Times ^ | September 3, 2005 | Brian DeBose and Stephen Dinan

Black Democrats in Congress and civil rights leaders yesterday accused the Bush administration of incompetence and a lack of compassion for blacks in response to the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

"Many of these Americans who now are struggling to survive are Americans of color," Rep. Elijah E. Cummings, Maryland Democrat, said. "Their cries for assistance confront America with a test of our moral compass as a nation."

He quoted the admonition of Christ to feed the hungry and clothe the naked, and said: "To the president of the United States, I simply say that God cannot be pleased with our response."

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, the highest-ranking black member of the administration, rejected the suggestion of racism in the government's response.

"That Americans would somehow in a color-affected way decide who to help and who not to help -- I just don't believe it," she said. "Americans are generous to each other, and I think you're seeing that people are opening their homes to people who are displaced and have had to be evacuated."

Black leaders at a press conference in Washington criticized news coverage they said has depicted blacks in New Orleans as looters and refugees.

"We cannot allow ourselves to see only the black faces doing the looting and not see the homeowners, the families, the children who have lost everything," said Dorothy I. Height, president emeritus of the National Council of Negro Women.

Mr. Cummings objected to the use of the term "refugees," which news organizations have applied to both whites and blacks left homeless by the storm. Dictionaries typically define "refugee" as "one who flees for safety, especially to a foreign country."

"I hate the term refugees," he said. "Americans are dying, not refugees. ...

Didn’t take long. Guess Mayor Nagin set the example.

I guess the sad thing is that this was a fully functioning first class city BEFORE the storm with ample supplies to feed it's population. The people left behind represented a small portion of that full population so there should have been enough food in stores and businesses to get these people by until help came.

The reason that this wasn't so was because some thugs decided to make a living hell out an already bad situation. Imagine if instead of looting, raping and destroying everything they used that energy to setup a distribution system to get commandered food and medical supplies to the people that needed it. While it would have still been awful it wouldn't have been hell.

***......Nearly 500 buses were supposed to transport 25,000 people from the Superdome to the Astrodome.

But the first bus to arrive in Houston was not provided by FEMA. It was a yellow Orleans Parish school bus driven by an unidentified teenager.

He had stolen the bus, loaded it with family members and left ahead of the official caravan.

Initially, Texas officials refused to admit the school bus refugees to the Astrodome. Then a Red Cross official named Margaret O'Brien-Molina noticed the children aboard. She walked them in, holding the hand of a 5-year-old girl.

"That little girl, think about what she's been through the last few days," she explained.

Before the day was over, the Astrodome was full and freeway signs that had welcomed refugees were switched to a different message: "Houston shelters are full. Go to Dallas or San Antonio."........*** Source

With every accusation they are admitting that New Orleans had no government to start with and it was "Bush's fault."

With every accusation they hope to cover up the fact that it was a Majority Black City, with a Black Police Chief and A Black Mayor and a Black City council.

Furthermore is was a Democratic city in a Democratic state.

Now this shouldn't matter, until The Black Caucus makes it matter. They are scared to death that it will become apparent that Blacks can't govern, and Democrats are the last bunch you want in control in an emergency.

The plan all along was to abandon the poor blacks, and the Mayor said as much in July as posted here on FR.

If the Black Caucus would just shut up about it, this would go away, but if they insist on making a stink then the stink is going to come home to roost.

And these thugs didn't just fall off the straight and narrow turnip truck.

New Orleans' government needs to be introspective and not go shooting their mouths off, blaming others.

But as they say, a good defense is a good offense.

" Why don't they take responsibility for their own failures, ......... " ............
That is something that the white people have been trying to convey to black people for years, and is one of the main sources of contention between black and white people.

Same old song same old dance, excuses and shift the blame. It's served the black community well over the years just look at the census information on New Orleans.

If almost all the people left are black then the whole picture is that almost all the people doing the rescuing are white.

All those " SUPPOSED " black leaders i.e. Jessy, Al Sharpton, Elijah Cummings, are just using the race card to stoke the flames of racial hatred, and is , one of the liberals/democrats ways to try to get back in power in Washington.
They hope to garner hatred towards white Republicans, so the voters will vote Democrat the next time around.
With their BS rhetoric, it is not helping the situation at all, in truth, it is making the situation worse.
What we should be hearing from these " SUPPOSED " black leaders is ? " We are ALL AMERICANS, and we ALL need to pull together as Americans, white or black, and we should ALL work together in this national tragedy and help each other get through this difficult time " .

They don't get it.

Democrat politicians do for themselves.

Racism is an easy talking point of concern to take to the podium for a "rebel without a cause".

Total baloney.

Months from now when all is settled down some, people will realize that this was just a tremendously different and awful event. The Federal government has done well, if there is a complaint about government, it's with the mayor and that incompetent governor.
