Katrina has been on the map since Friday (a week ago) and this liberal looser is just now recognizing it?

Huh?

This article is about the governor of Texas; the state that had a plan in the event of a hurricane; the state to which tens of thousands evacuated ahead of the storm; the state whose churches are feeding and housing thousands, and the state which is using the most prosperous area of its city to house, cloth and feed over a 100,000 of the poorest citizens of New Orleans.

What the heck are you talking about?

I am not a miss. I am a lifelong Texan. Comments were made regarding Hmong, Somali, and Mexicans. I do have very good friends in and from Biloxi, as well as Slidell. Not New Orleans, although have been there several times. All that I have at stake is my reputation and the reputation of Texas as being a wonderful bastion of sanctuary for any fellow American that comes here from Mississippi, Alabama, or Louisana. Anytime that posters to this board participate in bigotry or race baiting, I respond.

I hate it when people put words in my mouth. I'm still trying to find any info on my ex wife and her family as well as friends in Diamonhead. I'm just amazed at idiots that don't know how to actually read. I'd be more than happy to open my doors to my ex and family.

he stood up to the democrats and the media and called three special sessions on congressional redistricting, and now texas has 5 more republican congressmen.

he stood up to the plaintiffs bar by fighting for and getting the most sweeping tort reform in the country, including a constitutional amendment.

he's pro-life with a record to back it up. he's pro-second amendment -- again with a record to back it up. he's a fiscal conservative who took texas from a $10 billion deficit to a $6.4 billion surplus. texas is leading the nation in job creation because he's persoanlly recruiting business to come to texas.

spineless? not even close.

I couldn't agree more. I also think people should be careful about offering rooms in their home or allowing people to use other homes they have. I am not saying don't do it. Just check out the people first. I am worried some of these good hearted people will end up with visitors who have no intention of leaving.I'm sorry if this sounds harsh.

Sorry, Mpls/St. Paul is full-up with Hmong, Somalian and Mexican.

Doesn't sound like you are full up yet or doing your share with respect to taking Katrina refugees. In the 2000 census, Houston was 37% Hispanic, 25% black, and 5% Asian. By contrast, Minneapolis/St Paul was 7.7% Hispanic, 15% black, and 8.8% Asian.

I have my own notions as to why, but wonder if someone closer to the situation can enlighten.

LA has abdicated its responsibility for the refugees and the Republicans are seizing the opportunity to dilute the LA democrat base.

Hmmm...

Every state ought to take a number in proportion to its population, except that the authorities probably can't tell anyone "oh, you're going to go live in Alaska!" Most of the refugees who do not land quickly on their feet via family and friends will probably become long-term wards of the socialist state unless we develop a good constructive program for getting them back into society and the economy.

I'm afraid in the end, Katrina will move us much closer to socialism. I hope I'm wrong.

Louisiana, a state whose people that I love, has been closer to socialism since the days of "a chicken in every pot" Governor Huey Long than any other state in the union.

And Huey Long came to power in Louisiana because of the 1927 flood in New Orleans.

It's hard to think of the little ones going thru this terrible disaster.

I know. Heart-wrenching to see those little faces. Also the elderly who look as stunned and confused as the children.

I was being facetious about Minnesota not being able to help.

Minnesota is a welfare state.

I'm sure we will do our part to help.

I have contributed personally.

It is a good thing to make sure we can take care of our own citizens before others.

I am not a racist.

I voted for George Bush.

I think Texas is doing more than its' share.

I think Texas is a wonderful state with wonderful people.

I hope this is simple enough to not be miscontrued.

I will post like this from now on.

As a few people smoked cigarettes outside, a plane emerged overhead trailing a sign that read, "Shame on You George Bush."

Anyone get the tail number of that enemy aircraft? The owner's name and whoever paid for the banner should be published widely and shamed for wasting aviation fuel for such unhelpful purposes during this time of national need.

The Texas governor (the office) is one of the weaker out of the fifty states. A spine is great, but it doesn't help that much when your hands and feet are shackled.

Rick Perry looks good and he sounds good on camera. I was pleased that he represented Texas well this week.

As governor, he is a disaster.

I have voted for him, will not do it again.

There are a variety of reasons, the main two being:

-- his inability to forge any compromise on a long-standing school finance problem that has required three special sessions this year. Still no solution.

-- his horrible plan to cut huge scars through Texas for mega-multi-lane tollways, to be built and run by a company from Spain, the contractual details shady at best. Eminent domain, no public input till it was announced as a done deal.

I don't think Perry would be where he is if he hadn't been lieutenant gov and been elevated to governor when GWB was elected President.

Don't know who I will vote for next year, but it will NOT be Rick Perry, hair and all.

You aren't counting the people that are in their families homes. My parents house has almost tripled in size with all our family in from NO for the forseable future.

Some are talking of going to Baton Rouge eventually, but everyone is hunkered down

I bet there are 500k plus in Texas. Remember when the order went down they said DO NOT TAKE I-10 East to Houston
