THE ARIZONA DAILY STAR
As some evacuees from Hurricane Katrina arrived at Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Phoenix, there was still no official word Sunday from state leaders on how many other evacuees might be routed to Tucson.
As many as 1,000 people were expected to arrive by plane, buses and vans throughout Sunday, but estimates on how many of those evacuees would be sent to Tucson were still unclear, said Andrew Greenhill, chief of staff for Tucson Mayor Bob Walkup.
But the expectation remains that the Tucson Convention Center will serve as an evacuation site, he said.
On Saturday, about 200 volunteers from the American Red Cross and the Salvation Army, and Tucson and Pima County officials transformed the TCC exhibit halls into places where up to 800 people can eat, sleep, shower and receive health-related services for up to a month.
Alongside tables of toys, stuffed animals, hygiene products and clothing were rows of cots.
Each cot had its own pillow and blanket. One white pillow had a drawing of a saguaro and a comforting message for an impending arrival. The message read: "We love you."
Greenhill said people interested in volunteering or donating items should contact the Salvation Army first, before going to the TCC.
A beautiful site! Thank you, Arizona!
Over the top comments? definitely. But isn't this the standard being applied to the Federal efforts (while forgetting that evac was a local responsibility).
Now that I've made my point, good job Tucson for opening up your arms to shelter some of the people impacted by this killer storm. If I was in the area, I'd much rather be in Tuscon far from the next storm than in the Florida panhandle, etc.
Some 5000 are being transported into the former Fort Chafee near Ft. Smith, Arkansas.
Cities, large and small, are making 'beds' available.
2500-3000 are already at or are on their way to Ft. Gruber in NE Oklahoma. Less than 150 miles from Ft. Smith.
My small hometown in NW New Mexico is ready to take 400--heard from my mother today.
I'll bet Tucson has gasoline. Lord know we don't! Why else would I be sitting here online on Labor Day?
They're saying some of the refugees are refusing to get on buses that to to some places. Shame on them for that. Utah and AZ were two states I recall them mentioning.
Who's going to rebuild New Orleans and the rest of the south after they have bused everyone out?
Perhaps they just want to stay to help rebuild their home?
I can hardly wait for the interviews of evacuees on msm going something like"I don wanna go, you can't make me go--I'm a US citizen and I demand somebody take me back to NO so I can pick up my check from the gubmint office."
When you've lost everything, and are telling the media "no one wants to help" maybe it's smart to take what help is offered. If Houston is running out of room (and they way they are), they might just have to go somewhere else.
They won't even be allowed back into the city for months. Where will they live until then? Houston can only take so many before it's too crowded.
There must be places closer than Tuscon, Seattle, Cincinatti, etc. where they can put up camps and then bus them back in to do the work. This is crazy. They are going to bus all of these people out; someone else is going to rebuild it for them and then they are going to move them back in. The welfare goes on.
Just wondering what the people in your neighborhood have been saying about this? Are they grouping to help out?

No idea, my next door neighbor Patrick the control freak who runs the mailing list kicked me off after I sent the URL to pictures of the Bush visit to the fairgrounds.
Oh boy I didn't realize they were going to be a stones throw from my house. I hope they aren't sending any of the rapists and snipers.
The gun show is supposed to be at the fairgrounds facility next weekend. I wonder how they'll do access control?
Just heard on Fox that FEMA took over the transporting of refugees from the Texas Air National Guard. If it handles this as it has handled everything else, these facilities may never be used. I don't know why they needed to try their hand at screwing up the transporting of the victims, but I guess they didn't have anything else to do since no one was left in NO but looters and crazy people. Wonder if they've managed to deliver water to Jefferson Parish yet. They had not made a single delivery of anything by noon today.
