September 8, 2005: On the Moon, many of the things that can kill you are invisible: breathtaking vacuum, extreme temperatures and space radiation top the list.
Vacuum and temperature NASA can handle; spacesuits and habitats provide plenty of air and insulation. Radiation, though, is trickier.
The surface of the Moon is baldly exposed to cosmic rays and solar flares, and some of that radiation is very hard to stop with shielding. Furthermore, when cosmic rays hit the ground, they produce a dangerous spray of secondary particles right at your feet. All this radiation penetrating human flesh can damage DNA, boosting the risk of cancer and other maladies.

all your radiation penetrating human flesh belong to us.
Remind me never to take my clothes off on the moon, no matter how much I've had to drink...;o]
Wouldn't help. The story refers to neutrons kicked up from the lunar mass by radiation coming from the other side. Lead-lined jammies and tinfoil hats, on the other hand...
I think it's a fair bet that the bulk of the moon is already irradiated. I don't think digging will make the situation any better.
Time to start coming up with a lightweight alternative to lead!
"The first global mapping of neutron radiation from the Moon was performed by NASA's Lunar Prospector probe in 1998-99."
I believe NONE of the information gathered during THAT administration.
Please add me to the list. Thanks!
"they produce a dangerous spray of secondary particles right at your feet"
[Note to self:] Wear shoes when visiting the moon.
If this is how dangerous the moon is I admire NASA's achievement for protecting Neil Armstrong's tour in the surface of the moon years ago... though some people even some scientists dont believe that the moon landing did actually happened. Saw a documentary about this "conspiracy" in National Geographic.

His and the others protection was minimal. In fact I think there was some serious concern that we would lose all of them to an unexpected solar flare.
Transparent material would even nice too.
Wow... they're lucky it didnt occur that time...
IMO... NASA should just dump their plans to go back there if they had any. Btw... what benefit does it give U.S. to go there?
Please name ONE legitimate scientist who believes the lunar landings didn't occur.
Saw a documentary about this "conspiracy" in National Geographic.
Yea, and it completely debunked it.
and hello. hope things are well with you my friend!
You mean, my moon suntan fantasy is at risk?
I just hope they got those same moon maidens up there
that I saw in the 1950's movies....movies being such
mirrors of reality...
Just try to read this... i forget his name... this link:

The Lunar Regolith will not in itself become radioactive. The Neutron Shower is a byproduct of the high-energy particle interaction. Fortunately, if you build deep enough, this problem is alleviated. My suggestion is to dig horizontally into a crater wall with a tunnel leading out into the crater. Blast the rim of the crater burying the tunnel, viola, safe habitat. All you need to do is compute secondary neutron shower shielding and ensure you have enough material between you and it. When I was working with a bathtub reactor, we created high-energy neutrons for irradiating material. Shielding protected us from those neutrons.
