We've taken one of, if not, the only secular nations in the region and set up the basis for the next Islamic theocracy. Mind you, Hussein was a bad guy but he was the US bad guy (you do remember the last round of interventionism 'conservatives' supported back in the late 70s/early 80s don't you? BTW, if it's so obvious the purple finger will lead to Islamist iraq, surely tou can predict how long that will take. So go ahead. Meanwhile, I'll predict that this time next year Iraq will have a constitution in place that does not allow for Sharia law, and their people will have picked a U.S.-friendly secular government.

Please cite an example of a Western power putting down an autocratic regime in the Middle East and then following it up with a constitutional democracy that was chosen by the people of the country.

What you call "westernization" was colonization, not self-determination.

I agree with you. I believe that was a mistake to pick one bad guy over another but we did and Saddam spanked us hard for it (all the Amaricans Saddam killed in terrorist attacks.)

Are you referring to British Monarchy Vs Sharia law? Of course they would take Sharia law. I am confused why do you believe a Republic will not succeed in the Middle East? it has never been tried to my knowledge.
