Fewer Bodies Than Expected Found in Sweeps
AP ^ | September 9, 2005 | DON BABWIN

Posted on 09/09/2005 11:05:16 AM PDT by West Coast Conservative

Authorities said Friday that their first systematic sweep of the city found far fewer bodies than expected, suggesting that Hurricane Katrina's death toll may not be the catastrophic 10,000 feared.

"I think there's some encouragement in what we've found in the initial sweeps that some of the catastrophic deaths that some people predicted may not have occurred," said Terry Ebbert, New Orleans' homeland security chief.

Ebbert declined to give a new estimate of the dead.

Authorities turned their attention to counting and removing the dead in a grid-by-grid search of the city after spending days cajoling, persuading and all but strong-arming the living into leaving the shattered city because of the danger of fires and disease from the filthy, corpse-laden floodwaters.

"Numbers so far are relatively minor as compared to the dire projections of 10,000," Ebbert said.

Mayor Ray Nagin had suggested over the weekend that the death toll could climb that high, and authorities ordered 25,000 body bags as they started gathering up the dead across a landscape awash in corpses.

Separately, Maj. Gen. Bill Caldwell, commanding general of 82nd Airborne Division, said the last of the bodies at the convention center would be taken out on Friday. Thousands of people took shelter there after the hurricane for days with little or no food or water, in what became an increasingly chaotic and violent situation.

In a small sign of progress, authorities said the New Orleans airport will reopen to commercial flights on Sept. 19. Caldwell said water and power are functioning at the airport.

As of 21:08, 10/9/2005, officially 372. Katrina death toll swells to 372

As of 10/8/2005 the US Coast Guard had rescued over 23,900 people, most by helicopter. US Navy, NG and other active military, ground based emergency units have rescued hundreds, perhaps thousands more. Over 350 helicopters have been deployed to support rescue and relief operations. In contrast over 425 aircraft of all types, including fixed-wing and rotary, were deployed in Iraq as of March 2004.

Figure out who we can write a letter to and I'll get all my friends along with myself to lobby for captions. They really need to do that.

I'm starting to get the disturbing feeling that I've been duped by media hysteria.

Ya think?

The MSM is an appendage of the Democrat criminal political machine. The Dims hold out a bone and the MSM barks away. Even before they are called to task to answer their for their lies, they have already moved on to the next stage of demagoguery. They've got it down to a science.

Notice now the accusations are revolving around exactly how much in "benefits" the "mommy government" is obligated to deliver. Already, $2,000 in cash benefits, to be used to purchase alcohol, drugs, and designer clothes is being sneered upon as inadequate and stingy -- what, while the poor children are starving and all. We should give each one $20,000 cash up front and then $2,000 per month for live, plus a house and car -- all for the fact that they were plopped out like sausages some years ago.

"Did you not read thatCNN is trying to get approval to dig up bodies to show America the Federal Govt failure. They want us to see the "decaying" corps that suffered due to the Federal govt."

hypocritical insofar as they wont show 9/11 dead

Iron Jack, I think you're right. The Katrina coverage was the most hysterical I've ever seen.

In a small sign of progress, authorities said the New Orleans airport will reopen to commercial flights on Sept. 19. Caldwell said water and power are functioning at the airport.

Obviously, the airport was not affected by the hurricane or the flood. That said, we need to know why helicopters weren*t used to evacuate people from the airport? IF the mayor would have sent people to the airport instead of to the Super Dome, they could have got them out of there a lot sooner than they did.

The more I know about this the more I place blame on the mayor. He should have told FEMA and Homeland Security that the airport would not be under water and that they should come with the helicopters. Even if they had to use the boats to transport them over streets that might have been under water, they would have got them out a lot sooner. They could have brought in water and food to take care of the people who were waiting for the helicopters.

Good morning.
"What about the buildings still underwater?"

What about the lethal mold and disease carrying mosquitos that TPTB are using as an excuse for removing citizens from their dry homes?

Looks like I nailed this one. I predicted final death toll for New Orleans to end up at 250. The reasoning is set forth in the following post.

New Orleans Death Toll 10,000? I don't think so.

Looks like Galveston 1900 will remain the worst natural disaster ever to hit the united states, not that anyone will ever know or remember.

You're closer than MSM experts. And I saw a vital stat that NOLA records about 30 death/day in normal times.

So may of the corpses are likely to be normal mortality, and not storm/flood-related.
