I've been listening to WWL radio New Orleans early in the morning, and heard them discussing this story. The Memphis DA has stated that there will be no plea deals offered to anyone charged with a crime perpetrated on an evacuee.

"And they found she had a Tennessee driver's license with a Memphis address"

A life long Al Gore supporter?

"We will prosecute to the fullest ... we are not going to mess around," said Mid-South Red Cross CEO William Hildebrandt. "We will make sure every donated dollar goes where it's supposed to go."

The same Red Cross that redecorated their offices after their 911 windfall?

However, when she returned Saturday to pick up a $1,565 check, Hill gave an address in Mississippi that was different from the first one she gave workers.

She had to be THIS stupid to get caught.

Imagine how many are getting away with it.

This was bound to happen.

Also one for the "Dumb Criminals" book.

Think they behaved badly in New Orleans? You haven't seen anything until one sees Memphis in riot and loot mode. Wait till the big earthquake, the Memphis significant population will make New Orleans' looters look tame.

The smart ones can get away with scamming the system if this story is correct. Only the incredibly stupid are likely to be caught.

I wonder if the elected criminals of NO and LA who are even now plotting on how to divert some of the federal aid will be prosecuted, too.

How is a crime perpetrated on a hurrcane victim worse than a crime perpetrated on any other citizen. I wonder why the sudden change in prosecution practices.......Could be a great vote getter, I suppose.

Of course, she is the only one, and I'm glad they caught her. No one else would attempt this scam.

Does this mean that, had she given the same address, she would have been handed a check? How do we know that"victims" aren't collecting under multiple names? This looks like institutional thievery.

I recently moved to the area and I'm kind of glad to see
Memphis has just plain, ordinary, real crooks. It seems every time I read of a crook it is a politician or policeman!
