"As for popularity, the worlds most popular spectator sport is auto racing.

Oh, now that's exciting. And atheletic, too. Why it must take six ounces of effort to smash that gas pedal. And you have to sustain that for two hours always turning left (or right)."

As it happens, high level motor racing drivers are amongst the fittest athletes.

Here in the UK we used to have this televised sports competition called "Superstars" in which athletes from various sports would compete with each other in a range of events. As I recall, boxers, martial arts guys and racing drivers used to regularly do very well in this competition.

Used to be a show like that here, too. Soccer players used to win. (Kyle Rote, Jr., 2 or 3 years in a row)

"Odd how American football has never really caught on outside of the USA though. That is a good point when you consider how other US sports have, like baseball, basketball, volleyball, etc. I suppose it's because other countries already have the rough contact niche already filled (soccer, rugby, etc.) This would be a good topic of discussion by itself." True. However, are these sports really American? Basketball was devised by a Canadian (although I think he invented it in the USA) Baseball I understand is evolved from rounders, which is an English school game. Volleyball I think is a combination of elements of basketball (Canadian), baseball (English), tennis (France), and handball (ancient Egypt) The only bonefide all American sport that I can think of is is Gridiron.

Actually, a quick Google reveals that Gridiron is actually derived from rugby, another English school sport, and which itself evolved from football (soccer that is)

Is there any popular sport of American origin?

Oh, now that's exciting. And atheletic, too. Why it must take six ounces of effort to smash that gas pedal. And you have to sustain that for two hours always turning left (or right).

You have obviously never driven anything in competition. I have access to a race vehicle that would make even a well conditioned person turn to jello in about 20 minutes of driving. It's a 250cc shifter kart. It has handling, acceleration and braking capabilities on par with a formula 1 race car. I raced one for time against a bunch of guys with porsches, bmw's and a lamborghini, and my was only 70% of the next closest time at an autocross setup. They all wanted to try the machine, and none could handle the machine on the track longer than 8 minutes without having to pull off the track because their legs were fried, their arms burning from the force requiredto make the turns and their necks ready to snap from the g-force in the turns. All but one of the guys are big-time soccer players who did not have the physical (ATHLETIC) capacity to do what's required to drive a simple (ok, deceivingly not so simple) kart.

You may claim that racers are not athletes, but if you want to go one-on-one racing shifter karts, then play some soccer against me, a not-so-athletic guy, I would bet you crawl home a limp sniveling mess after 20 minutes of the most intense mental & physical workout you have ever had, without even making it to the soccer field.

Man, I am sorry so many people missed my point. What is obvious is if you don't like the sport (soccer, cycling) the participants are sissies. If you like the sport your guys are the fittest (and coolest) atheletes. Then they go into invective, just like a liberal.

Soccer, a game played by 5 year old girls. World Cup Soccer - 2 hours of chasing the ball around to see 1 (maybe2) goals. BORING!

Still, the most popular sport in the world, without to have a 300+pound fat player to smash into another group of 300+lbs opponents without any technical finesse, and ordinary people can participate in, including 5 years old girls running for a full 90 minutes without being supplied with an oxygen mask!!!

Every ball sport in the world is derived from the first prehistoric man who played catch with a stone. What exactly do you mean "American origin"? How is that defined?
