Severin's phony Pulitzer (Jay Severin)
Boston Globe ^ | 09/16/2005 | Scot Lehigh

OCCASIONAL LISTENERS to ''Extreme Games" on WTKK are accustomed to host Jay Severin admiring himself in the mirror of his own imagination, a glass so vast and glittering as to rival the Hall of Mirrors at Versailles.

But last Friday, the talkmaster positively outdid himself in setting new laurels upon his brow:

He awarded himself a Pulitzer Prize.

That came as part of a conversation with a caller about the declining standards he sees in journalism. Here's what Jay said: ''But since journalism began, and up until the time at least that I took my master's degree at Boston University -- and may I add without being obnoxious, up till and including the time that I received a Pulitzer Prize for my columns for excellence in online journalism from the Columbia School of Journalism, the highest possible award for writing on the Web -- right up to and including that in 1998, you still had to practice journalism to be a journalist."

That struck several listeners as unlikely. Once I'd heard the claim, I asked the Pulitzer folks to check it out. ''We looked at the records and there is no record of him winning a Pulitzer Prize," says Sig Gissler, administrator of the Pulitzers. Nor is there a Pulitzer for excellence in online journalism.

How does Jay explain his assertion?

''What I said was, there is a prize that my editor told me is the equivalent of the Pulitzer Prize for Web journalism," Severin said in an interview. ''That is a hell of a caveat."

Certainly it would have been if Severin had made it. The problem is, he didn't. I read him his on-air comment.

''I certainly could have been more precise," he conceded. Or more, say, truthful.

But he fits right in here in Bosotown, doesn't he?

We have a U.S. Senator whose sole claim to fame -- not infamy, now -- is that his three older brothers died in World War II, in the back seat of the presidential limousine, and in a kitchen staffed by a Palestinian with a pistol.

We have another U.S. Senator who claims to be a war hero for being wounded while playing with a grenade launcher, for wearing a bandaid, and for shooting an unarmed, fleeing teenage Vietnamese boy in the back.

We have numerous frauds up her in the public arena. Scoopnose Severin is just one of many frauds here.

I once listened to Severin. That was until the reality of events proved him wrong time and time again. It is no wonder he is no longer a campaign adviser. One must be able to predict political outcomes correctly at least 50% of the time. That mark he has fell far short of particularly when it involves President Bush.

Severin has predicted President Bush's demise so many times that its become boorish. Iraq is another situation he constantly gets wrong time and time again. I think half of this is brought on by the fact that he seems to need to fit in to some uppity social club and to show his "intelligence" he joins in with them on some issues. Which is fine if one wants to be some ones lap dog.

The one thing I find particularly funny is how on one hand Mr. Severin will attack the Boston Globe, New York Times, and Washington Post and with the other hand use articles written in them to attack President Bush.

I will spend my time listen to fart jokes and such. At least I know that the opinions coming out of Carrs mouth are honest and factual.

Severin has been severly embarrassed by the revelations of all the things he has simply made up - his Pulitzer - his "on-line equivalent of the Pulitzer" - his Harvard Law degree - his award for his MNBC column - and now it turns out that the Masters Degree from Boston University is a figment of his imagination. He just makes things up to give him cred. Who wants to listen to someone like that.

I listened to Jay for five years. I haven't listened to Jay much in the past year but I did enjoy him when he wasn't ranting and raving against the war in Iraq, or Pres. Bush, or trying to convince everyone he was Gods gift to young, sexy women. I can't IMAGINE being married to the guy and always suspected he was divorced at least once.

It must be true that vampires (have you ever seen Jays picture?) can't see their own reflection in the mirror the way he seemed to fool himself into believing he was a young studmuffin.
