Update: Category 5 Hurricane Rita - Live Thread, Part II
NHC - NOAA ^ | 21 September 2005 | NHC - NOAA

Posted on 09/21/2005 1:36:24 AM PDT by NautiNurse

Category 3 Hurricane Rita became the fifth major hurricane of the 2005 season during the night. Hurricane Rita threaded the needle through the Florida Straits and moved into the Gulf of Mexico. Storm damage in the Florida Keys and South Florida Peninsula was light, with scattered power outages, scattered tornados, and mild to moderate flooding.

Mandatory evacuations are in effect for Galveston County TX and New Orleans. Additional evacuation orders in the Greater Houston Metropolitan Area are anticipated throughout the day.

Crude oil prices reacted as oil producers shut down and evacuated workers from platforms in the Gulf of Mexico.

Looks like most of the models have Rita hitting south of Galveston Bay/Houston but north of Corpus Christi.

JMO and FWIW, the best case scenario would be if it hits sparsely populated Kennedy county home of the huge King Ranch.

NautiNurse ~ could you please add me to your "surf's up ping list" - at least for Hurricane Rita, anyway. I'm going to need to try to stay on top of this one, I think.

Thx!

Yikes, 120mph already.

Actually I'm wondering if he didn't pull the trigger early because, since the recon flight was scrubbed, they were just using the last frames of data they got from the Key West
WSR-88D and extrapolating.

Well, the models are bunching up looks more like Rockport, Port Lavaca, Port O'Connor...same place CARLA went in back in 1961. I doubt she'll trend much further south than that. Yep, the King Ranch would be perfect 200 miles of ranch land.
