Hurricane Rita Live Thread, Part VII
NHC - NOAA ^ | 23 September 2005 | NHC - NOAA

Posted on 09/23/2005 8:01:35 PM PDT by NautiNurse

Hurricane Rita landfall is anticipated within the next few hours. Strong winds and heavy rains are battering southern Louisiana and southeastern Texas.

MSM news crews are shouting over the howling winds as they foolishly describe blowing rain, swaying trees, and crashing waves through rain splattered camera lenses. It's a hurricane. We know these things already.

An 18 wheeler rig reportedly overturned on an I-10 bridge. The fate of the truck driver is unknown at this time. Reports of widespread power outages in Lake Charles. KPLC-TV Lake Charles local news has remarkably improvised their reporting from a remote location. They are taking calls from residents, NWS, and public utility representatives, and alerting residents to local conditions.

On the flip side, CNN announced to the world that law enforcement officers had evacuated from Port Arthur TX with the rest of the population. Engraved looter invitations would have been more elegant.

Godspeed to all those in the path of this storm.

Its only about a half tank of gas to get back in. Gas cans are sold out throughout the state now, so many of the early returners will have them. Remember the traffic inbound won't be nearly as bad as yesterday because except for at Columbus, TX, there aren't any choke points and the roads will widen as they get into the suburbs. In contrast outbound traffic had to go from in effect 3-14 lanes down to 2-4. Once they get in they can hunker down for a few days at their home, the main thing is to get back and repair and protect the homes. Most of the early returners will have stocks of emergency type foods at home and bringing in with them. The sooner they get back, the less the looting problem.

"Geraldo is back on FNC on the phone. Well, he was. Didn't hear if he was inside or outside"

Inside, I gather.. Reporting that "main" window blew out on Motel he's hunkered down in -- packing a few things to bug out, I think he said just before connection lost.

Sounded scared, if ya ask me.....

Hello everyone! I HATE Adelphia Cable in Miami! I lost my broadband connection shortly after 11 PM last night, and it didn't come back until now. I was nearly going out of my mind without FR during the approach and landfall. Thank God I'm back on now.

Did Rita really come in with 120 mph winds, or was she intensifying as she came in?

I think I really learned to type fast during the Iraq war. I was one of the freepers with several webcams running througout Baghdad, and channel surfing like crazy to get news on here. :)

Mornin chief....you holding up ok?

Barely. Looks like we both missed landfall predictions. It was at 2:30 between Sabine Pass and Johnsons Bayou, Louisiana.

There's a vortex report with an eye fix at 2:25 someplace, and the fresh one is from 2:55 that has the eye 3 miles inland.

Given the experience with NOLA, isn't that just a tad premature??

That probably depends on the path of the storm over land. If it hooks right, canceling the evac for those areas would be correct. If the storm stalls for a day or 2 and then hooks left, it would be premature.

New Orleans is going to have serious flooding when all the rain Rita is bringing ashore comes back down the MS River and hits the weakened levees.

The levees that are leaking aren't the MS levees, but the levees that keep lake water out of New Orleans. The river levees at New Orleans haven't been under particular stress.
