The Threat Matrix

The title refers to a daily report given to the president of the United States detailing the most serious terrorist threats against the country. To tackle those threats, the government has formed a top-notch task force to infiltrate the terror cells and cut off the danger.

"Every morning, the president receives a list of the top ten terrorist threats - this list is known as the threat matrix."

We here at FR are trying to be in conjunction with the daily reports around the world that involve threats. We try to provide a storehouse of information that takes hours of research.

Home grown Islamists may hit US: FBI chief

WASHINGTON -- The United States could be attacked by "home grown" Islamist terror groups, the FBI's chief has warned.

FBI Director Robert Mueller told the London Financial Times newspaper in an interview published Thursday that the United States could face attacks from "home-grown terrorism" very similar to the July 7 bombings in London that killed 52 people and wounded another 700, Mueller said.

When asked if the United States could face such attacks from "home-grown groups", Mueller answered emphatically: "Absolutely, it could," the Financial Times said.

Thanks for the ping. As I was walking to Penn Station they broke into Hannity's radio show with the press conference. 19 again. Police chief sounded very serious. Immediately after the press conference and alert, along comes Michael Savage, on the air in NYC, expressing skepticism about the threat. Insinuating that it's some sort of diversion from Bush's low numbers. I am seeing red right now. People in NYC should be taking this seriously not being fed this crap.

Yes, that number again. It obvious that attacks have been plotted and operatives have been given the "go" for October. Bloomberg said it was credible and that they have specifics as to target and timing. They're not telling us, however.

Since I believe that these terrorists have a simple number code, my
best guess would be 10th month, 11th day, 9 AM. (Hmmm, all the
same numbers in 9-11-01.)

Remember that all the aliases of these terrorists is normally a
manipulation of the letters in the name.

9-11 and the mailing dates on the anthrax letters were all on a
Tuesday and the 11th is a Tuesday.

Thanks RR. I'm always at threat level "red". Sounds like the word has gone out for October. It's no coincidence that we had Bali, OU, and now this. Couple that with chat of OBL making an appearance after the next attack on the US and W's speech this morning...... I'd say it's going to be a long month.

U.S. Says Terrorists May Pose As Vagrants

In the world of jihad, not everything is as it seems. The homeless person on the corner that you passed on your way to work this morning, for example. What if he's not "just watching all the girls go by?" From AP, with thanks to Jeffrey Imm.

WASHINGTON - Asking for increased vigilance in the wake of the London bombings, the government is warning that terrorists may pose as vagrants to conduct surveillance of buildings and mass transit stations to plot future attacks.
"In light of the recent bombings in London, it is crucial that police, fire and emergency medical personnel take notice of their surroundings, and be aware of 'vagrants' who seem out of place or unfamiliar," said the message, distributed via e-mail to some federal employees in Washington by the U.S. Attorney's office.

It is based on a State Department report that was issued last week. The State Department had no immediate comment Monday.

The warning is similar to one issued by the FBI before July 4, 2004 that said terrorists may attempt surveillance disguised as homeless people, shoe shiners, street vendors or street sweepers...

Plane Carrying Viruses Crashes in Canada

A cargo plane carrying small amounts of flu virus crashed on railway tracks near Winnipeg's city center Thursday, killing the pilot but missing buildings and vehicles, authorities said.

The research samples of frozen influenza and herpes viruses were destroyed in the crash and ensuing fire along with other freight, Federal Express spokeswoman Karen Cooper said.

Government officials said that in the last couple of days, a C.I.A.-F.B.I. operation in Iraq had taken two people there into custody in an effort to disrupt the plot. The officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because details are classified, said the plot appeared to involve a dozen or so people in an effort to plant explosives in the subway system around the middle of this month.

At the news conference, officials would only allude to an overseas operation and declined to provide details about detentions, saying only that they had taken place outside New York.

"Classified operations have partially disrupted this threat," Mark Mershon, assistant director of the Federal Bureau of Investigations' New York office, said at the news conference. "The F.B.I. and other U.S. personnel continue to work around the clock. Nothing that has surfaced in that investigation has corroborated an actual threat to the city."

Mr. Mershon said the threat could be "resolved in the coming days," but he did not explain what he meant.

The city has known about the threat for several days, the mayor said, but decided that making it public too soon "could have jeopardized the lives" of some investigators.

Bus Catches Fire Inside Brooklyn Battery Tunnel
Tunnel Closed Brooklyn-Bound
(New York - WABC, October 6, 2005) - A bus caught fire inside the Brooklyn Battery tunnel Thursday night about 250 feet north of the Brooklyn exit.

Civilians exited on foot out of the tunnel and according to officials there were multiple injuries, though none of them serious. Three patients were being treated at the scene for smoke inhalation.
According to authorities, the bus had overheated which caused the smoke condition. The bus was cleared of any potential suspicious packages and was in the process of being removed from the tunnel.

The tunnel is shut down Brooklyn-bound only at this time.


According to officials this is an accident and there is no suspicious activity involved.

Again, there is no indication that this is in any way related to the subway terror threat Mayor Bloomberg revealed earlier today.

We'll have more on this fire as we get more information and we'll have a complete wrap up on Eyewitness News at 11:00 p.m.

A well-placed U.S. military official told CNN on Thursday that the same intelligence also led to a raid against suspected al Qaeda operatives in Iraq.

No arrests have been made in Manhattan, but operations continue outside the city, Kelly said, without mentioning where.

And Bloomberg said that officials "do not have any reason to believe" that any of the plotters "are in New York at this point in time"

The highly classified operation involving the U.S. intelligence community and the U.S. military was carried out against suspected al Qaeda operatives south of Baghdad, CNN has learned from a well-placed U.S. military official.

"Significant intelligence was also gathered in this raid, along with al Qaeda operatives who were rounded up," CNN's Jamie McIntyre reported, citing the official who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Few other details were provided about the raid, which occurred in the town of Musayyib, in the lawless area nicknamed "The Triangle of Death." But the official said the raid was the result of the same intelligence about the threat to New York's subway system.
