The Threat Matrix

The title refers to a daily report given to the president of the United States detailing the most serious terrorist threats against the country. To tackle those threats, the government has formed a top-notch task force to infiltrate the terror cells and cut off the danger.

"Every morning, the president receives a list of the top ten terrorist threats - this list is known as the threat matrix."

We here at FR are trying to be in conjunction with the daily reports around the world that involve threats. We try to provide a storehouse of information that takes hours of research.

Home grown Islamists may hit US: FBI chief
Full Story

WASHINGTON -- The United States could be attacked by "home grown" Islamist terror groups, the FBI's chief has warned.

FBI Director Robert Mueller told the London Financial Times newspaper in an interview published Thursday that the United States could face attacks from "home-grown terrorism" very similar to the July 7 bombings in London that killed 52 people and wounded another 700, Mueller said.

When asked if the United States could face such attacks from "home-grown groups", Mueller answered emphatically: "Absolutely, it could," the Financial Times said.

On the spot in Tehran: 'A family day-out ... with
flag-burning'
Timesonline ^ | 10-28-05 | Ramita Navai

Posted on 10/28/2005 5:57:27 AM PDT by SJackson

Iranian schoolboys shoot with their toy guns in Tehran

Ramita Navai, Tehran Correspondent for The Times, was among
thousands on the streets of the Iranian capital for annual anti-Israel
rallies, at which the President continued his inflammatory rhetoric.

"It's a bit like a family day out, but with cursory outbreaks of flag
burning. There are picnics, street-vendors and people selling
balloons... there's a kind of carnival atmosphere.

"But I walked past one stand where people were writing messages on
a flag to send to Palestine. There was a girl there, she can't have been
older than 5, and she had just signed her name below a message
reading 'Death to Israel, death to America.'

"The conservative hardliners have turned out in force, but it would be
a mistake to think that all of Iran is on the streets baying for Israel's
blood.

"The majority of ordinary Iranians don't really care about Israel - they
have enough to worry about at home with a declining economy and
high unemployment.

"Many of the people are wearing bibs or carrying banners which read
'Peaceful Nuclear Energy is Iran's Right.' That is certainly an issue
which has united all of Iran - the destruction of Israel is not.

Police investigate suspicious packages - Liverpool Railway Station (Australia)

Police are investigating the discovery of two suspicious packages at Liverpool Railway Station this afternoon.

About 3.50pm today, two suitcases were found abandoned on platform one. One of the bags was emitting an electrical noise.

Police from Liverpool Local Area Command, Campbelltown Commuter Crime Unit and the Counter Terrorism Unit were alerted and attended the scene.

As a result, 200 commuters were evacuated from all three platforms and train services were prevented from picking up and setting down passengers at Liverpool Station.

Witnesses have told officers they saw a man leave the bags on the platform.

Shortly before 5.40pm, the bags were declared safe by specialist police and removed from the scene.

I just posted a whole bunch of news from Iran. Did you see this one? I'll have photos up shortly.

Bush, Sharon burned in effigy, US flag kicked by children at rally in Tehran in front of Iran's President

The World Quds Day demonstrators on Friday set on fire the effigies of the US President George W. Bush and Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon as well as the US and Israeli flags.

The demonstrators, from various walks of life, set ablaze more than 30 effigies of Bush and Sharon as symbols of arrogant powers, chanting such slogans as `death to America' and `death to Israel' to express their support for the Palestinian Intifada.

Children form the capital city of Tehran kicked the US flags and issued a statement to the United Nations calling for liberalization of Quds.

Thousands have reportedly taken part in the rallies on the World Quds Day which marks the last Friday of the holy fasting month of Ramadhan, initiated by Founder of Iran's Islamic Republic the late Imam Khomeini.

Interesting editorial from Le Monde in France:

French Editorial: World Should Be Very Worried About Iran's Nuclear Intentions Editorial: "Hatred"

The mask has fallen, if there was any such need. By calling on the Muslim world to ensure that Israel disappears from the map, Iranian President Mahmud Ahmadinejad completed, in a few words, Wednesday 26 October, the disturbing portrait of an all-powerful and extremist head of state. With each of his statements, the Iranian ambition, now represented by this former revolutionary guard, is emerging increasingly openly and aggressively.

To all those who believed, or wanted to believe, that the Islamic Republic had at last calmed down, in particular by ceasing to nurture its "anti-Zionist" obsession, actual events have demonstrated that this is not at all the case. Mahmud Ahmadinejad's Iran is sticking to its guns. The new Iranian president is indeed resolved to revive the official doctrine of the young Republic since its creation in 1979: "As imam Khomeyni said, Israel must be removed from the map," he told several thousand inflamed students, at a conference on the unequivocal theme of "The World Without Zionism."

Suddenly the reformist period of Mohammed Khatami's presidency (1997-2005) has come to an end. Now Iran is again more radical than the Palestinians, resolved to do become spokesman of the Muslim world, to claim the leadership of the disinherited, humiliated, and angry masses. In this coveted role, the Iranian president chooses to speak like the most extremist preachers, encouraging the crowd to pillory Israel and the United States and, for good measure, promising Arab leaders tempted to recognize the Jewish state that they will burn "in the fire and fury of the community of believers."

This rationale of hatred used by the Iranian president occurs against the backdrop of a political stiffening. Having failed to revive his people's hopes within a few months (15 percent of the population o working age are unemployed,) and having failed to show that oil revenue can be better shared, the regime is striving to flatter the most conservative and dogmatic reflex responses. Women, in particularly, who had in recent years enjoyed very hesitant progress, are again subject to permanent control of their attire. The world of culture is under close surveillance: the Supreme Council of the Cultural Revolution has just banned the distribution and projection "of foreign movies spreading secular, feminist, and liberal ideas..." Websites are being monitored, censored, or banned.

The brutal nature of this regression is more than a bad sign. It is a cause for serious alarm, at a time when Iran's nuclear ambitions are being persistently displayed. At the end of the negotiations between Teheran and the EU, nobody believes any longer in the fairy story of an oil power seeking to acquire a civilian nuclear resource. The international community is now justified in feeling very seriously worried about what use Iran would make of the bomb.

Lebanon allows increase in Hizbullah presence
(Lebanon still suffers influence of Syria and Iran)
Middle East Newsline ^ | 2005 Oct 28

Posted on 10/28/2005 4:17:21 AM PDT by Wiz

WASHINGTON [MENL] -- The Lebanese Army has allowed Hizbullah to
increase its armed presence near the border with Israel.

A United Nations report said the government of Prime Minister Fuad
Siniora has embarked on a policy to reduce the military presence in
southern Lebanon. At the same time, Siniora has ordered the army to
increase deployment along the Syrian border.

Lebanon, the report said, has failed to fulfill Resolution 1559, passed
in September 2004 and which called for the disarming of Hizbullah and
Palestinian insurgency groups. The report said the Beirut government
has also refused to impose its authority over Hizbullah-dominated
areas in southern Lebanon.

Laura, your posts #4406 and 4408, they seem to point to a war at any minute.

What comes next, is not going to be nice.

With Iran, comes Cuba, Russia and maybe North Korea, plus all the other communist countries attempting to get a lick in at us.

Thank you for letting us know that you are also working on the Iran thought.

Another day to look out for is Nov. 9 ... if you want to believe the Weekly World News. So, I'm standing in the checkout line at our local Publix store with my 6-year-old son yesterday and he sees this monster headline on the cover of WWN - "11/09/05 - End of the World" - something about Jesus coming back. My son was none too pleased: "I don't want to die, Daddy." I told him WWN was just trying to sell copies.

Boy, what a surreal conversation that was.

(Sorry for it being in French)

Basically what it says is summarized in the AFP and Kuwaiti News Agency articles on my site - that the French have confirmed that Islamists have two SAM-18 anti-aircraft missiles for use against civilian airliners.

Le Figaro has the most complete coverage - but it's in French, and although I can read it well enough to understand I don't generally translate French. the AFP and Kuwaiti News Agency articles summarize it well though.
