In a just-completed interview on Fox News, Weekly Standard editor Bill Kristol made no effort to sugar coat his criticism of President Bush's selection of Harriet Miers as his Supreme Court nominee.
Among Kristol's comments:
There is no way to say she is the best-qualified.
It really looks like W, faced with pressure and criticism, "flinched."
This is an insult to the well-qualified conserative women W has appointed to the federal bench.
W could have appointed Miers to a federal judgeship before but didn't do so. Could reflect his views on her qualifications up till now.
He's spoken with a number of leading conservatives already this morning and they are disappointed.
Kristol stated more than once that he was surprised by the pick and was obviously disappointed, to the point of seeming almost angry.
Well, she is considerably better looking than Justice Ginsberg, I think.

He's right, Bush not only flinched, he bent over, this is disgusting, my father with many other Americans risked their lives for this country, and he can't stand up against a little pressure????? It's time to throw out the gutless moderates who want do nothing than to protect their positions and comfort. Lets not sell out our children's future for our ease! when your house is being broken into, you need a doberman, not a labrador, granted the doberman will make a mess when a burglar comes in, but at least you will still have your stuff!!!!!!!!
The fact that Bush "knows" her says nothing. Presumably, he also "knew" the pro-preferences views of Alberto Gonzales when he appointed him AG.
Yeah, its our fault he sold out nearly every conservative issue not one year into re-election for which he has the conservatives mostly to thank.
Many thought Gore was a moderate to conservative Democrat. He was pro-life back then. That was his public reputation.
Bill Kristol never misses a chance to stick a knife in the President's back. I often think he chooses his words based on what the malcontents post on Free Republic.
Kristol, you will recall, came out and attacked the President over the China Spy Plane settlement...said that he was fnished in foreign policy and was weak. Blah, blah, blah.
Kristol is all about himself, and secondarily about attacking the Bush family. If you want me to go on for HOURS about Kristol's machinations, I will be glad to do so.
Best commment on Fox by Ron Kauffman: A lot of conservative talking heads are concerned about this nomination. Conservatives in general are willing to trust the President.

Bush hasn't been very conservative. He doesn't believe in smaller gov't and he certainly doesn't believe in limited gov't.
Some of us would be impressed if he would figure out how to use the veto for once, especially on an important issue like CFR.

That's so far down the list of qualifications for SC justice that it doesn't even register.
Good. That means she's a good pick. Kristol has been wrong about almost everything, and is a McCainiac to the core.

This is nothing other than Souter all over again. The same tired arguments by the Bushbots are being dusted off. This family needs to be stopped and retired. They are flat out dangerous.
I don't. He speaks for McCain, and you can bet if he had his druthers (Kristol) a much LESS conservative person would have been named. She's a good pick.
Brown or Owen would have been confirmed. Both are younger. There would have been a fight, and a filibuster, but Bush would have won after the nuke option. The vote would be close, but who cares? We'd get a younger nominee whose opinions are known. The base would be rallied. Conservatives would be excited.
The Miers nomination is a shot in the dark. She's a decade older than a nominee should be. She has little in the way of a paper trail. She may turn out okay, but who knows? Chuck Schumer has a smirk on his face this morning, as if he bullied the White House and they backed down to avoid fighting him.
I was won over by Roberts, but this nomination looks to be a wasted opportunity to rally the base with a younger established conservative.

How many cases does the Supreme Court decide each term and how many of those cases involve abortion?
We see it with O'Conner and definately with Gisburg. Some people just can't handle the truth.

He signed it admitting it was unconstitutional. What a joke. I still can't believe I traveled a week to Florida and gave up a weeks salary to volunteer to have him re-elected.
I like Roberts, but this pick seems such a dark horse.
