From the same Washington Times article ...

But meanwhile, the White House and Republican leadership emissaries are quietly telling conservative interest groups and pundits opposed to the Miers nomination that they are out of step with their rank and file.

Conservative activist Michael D. Brown said internal GOP polling being cited by party and administration emissaries purports to show that "70 percent of self-identified conservative voters have a favorable impression of Harriet Miers."

The emissaries are warning that ordinary Republicans beyond the Washington Beltway continue to support the nomination because they trust President Bush, even after several weeks of conservative opposition to her, according to several conservative Miers critics who have been courted by the White House.

The administration is "disappointed that conservatives inside the Beltway are fighting among ourselves over this nomination, and it fuels the fires for our enemies, for Democrats," said Mr. Brown, the former Federal Emergency Management Agency director.

Those appear to be the "opposition is weak" dismissal; the "you risk being shunned for being out of step with the clique" threat; the "opposition is fueling the enemies" anti-loyalty lament and guilt-trip; and the "trust in the president" cheer.

"Good job, Brownie."

Ping to my previous post (two more, and I think the best ones of the bunch).

You missed one, but it was subtle:

"ordinary Republicans beyond the Washington Beltway"

The 'elitist' slam is right there--it's only the 'Beltway' conservatives that don't support Miers, donchaknow?

Since when is Michael Brown a "conservative activist?"

I do not know why people are trumpeting the fact that Ms. Miers was president of the State Bar as a reason to support her nomination for the Supreme Court.

Presidency of the Texas State Bar is not an award given to the best lawyer in the State of Texas. It is the culmination of years of glad-handing and back-slapping (with a dash of tokenism) in a mutual admiration society. Texas State Bar elections are most akin to the old Soviet elections. The ruling claque selects two candidates (who in certain years meet either a gender or a minority requirement) and then the hoi polloi can select among the chosen two.

As a caveat, I think I did vote for Ms. Miers (in one of the last years before I stopped voting in State Bar elections) because she was only a mushy mod-liberal while her chosen opponent was a hard-core liberal.

Great find on ACU and the other organizations. I think we'll see Dobson flip pretty soon if she isn't withdrawn.

Good catch.

If the Miers proponents had powerful substantive supporting evidence, it would have been out weeks ago. Threats, shame and intimidation are coalition BUSTING tools, not coalition BUILDING tools. And we come full circle to the "what was President Bush thinking?" discussion.

Just for the thread, back to Leonard Leo, it seems he quietly resigned his WH assignment on the 19th.

Several members of the Federalist Society who know Mr. Leo have said that they think he is only backing Miss Miers out of loyalty to the Bush administration rather than support on the merits.

Mr. Leo said that he announced his departure in an Oct. 19 e-mail and that it was "effective immediately."

But as of yesterday, even Republicans working closely with him on the nomination said they had no idea Mr. Leo had relinquished his duties.

Mr. Leo had worked as the "campaign manager," organizing the massive support among conservatives for the confirmation of Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr., according to a source close to Mr. Leo. But with the deep disappointment among conservatives over the Miers nomination, "there's really no campaign here," the source said.

The Independent Women's Forum has also done a complete 180 of late.

Plus, I haven't heard anything positive coming from the ACLJ in ages.

It appears as if the Miers camp has dwindled down to the dead-enders.

Brownie is leading the charge to confirm Harriet?

They've gone beyond insane. And they like it.

***MNJohnnie and Dane seem to have disappeared temporarily.
Thank God for small favors.***

"Open Borders" DANE usually crawls out from under his rock to post on weekends. I can't recall as to MNJohnnie.

And if it wasn't Illegal Aliens and now Miers, Dane would have zero to comment spin and bloviate on.

From what I know Michael Brown is about as qualified to be on the Supreme Court as Miers, I thought he was a lawyer too. (And he at least has some disaster experience, which Miers is clearly lacking).

This is so sad. I mean, it really is a case of the emperor not having any clothes. It’s a shame this had to happen. She should have withdrawn within a the first few days.

You know, disastrous, unqualified Bush cronies gotta stick together through thick and thin, don’t you think? Where would the world be if they didn’t?

The Brownie shilling proves one thing: the Bush administration is either purposefully trying to scuttle this nomination or else they really don’t have two brain cells to rub together. If the latter case, I think Bush should declare himself a Democrat. It would make great TV for weeks watching the Dems’ reaction and if he announces enough liberal policies, it may just do for the Dems what he’s been doing for us the last three and a half weeks.

As John McEnroe said:

“You CANNOT be serious”!

Brownie? this is getting absurd.

Imagine, from John Roberts, best SC litigator of his generation to Brownie flaking for Miers.

How truly sad.

Plus, I haven't heard anything positive coming from the ACLJ in ages.

Sekulow sauntered out predictably to champion Harriet in the wake of Robertson and some of Pat's doppelgangers. This was when Robertson was warning the senators of the wrath and fire and brimstone that he would rain upon them if they didn't support Miers.

It's been about a week. Since then, nada.

I do not know why people are trumpeting the fact that Ms. Miers was president of the State Bar as a reason to support her nomination for the Supreme Court.

Not merely that she was president of the association, but that she was the first woman to hold that post.

She is a poster child for women's equal rights. The WH is playing to the female wing of its support constituency (as well as the evangelical wing and party-faithful wing). Of course, there is some overlap in those constituency groups, and none of them are "all in" or "all out."
