I don't think he's cynically trying to have it both ways. He just doesn't have the fire in his belly for a SC brawl. It's not Iraq.
Mark Steyn had a piece today that was excellent as usual, and he pointed out that no matter how much people are going to want to throw the repub bums out, a concomitant drive to throw the dem bums in, does not exist, and he's absolutely right.
That's a good advantage for the very right of center republicans. They were right to draw a line in the sand, and the party needed this.
Steyn also pointed out that the dems are completely out of ideas, which is irrefutable. But part of the reason they are, is that they implemented so much of their ideology over the past 40 years, that they are a product of their own success. They weren't able to put their ideas into practice because they didn't want to take the fight to someone. They did take the fight to whoever opposed them, and they won.
Harold Ickes, like him or not, lost a kidney, due to a fight that ensued during a civil rights march.
Conservatives are on the right side of the moral debates, and on the right side of history, at the moment. May they push as hard as the dems did to see their ideology prevail, and may they not lose heart when their own party thinks of them as the grassroot dagos they now have to live with.
And that worked out fine. It drove the party to the right again a led to election of GWB. Unfortunately, we just thought GWB was conservative.
In any event, the republican congress forced Clinton to govern as a relative spendthrift and things worked out fine. With a democrat in the whitehouse, the GOP congress actually scrutinized spending bills - with a Republican in the whitehouse they just rubberstamp them.
The party becoming weaker is not a bad thing if it is headed in the wrong direction.

Reagan was supported by moderates and conservatives from BOTH parties.

I see a weak fiscal side, but that is about it. That would be easy to fix, but you don't blow the party up to do it. Sorta non productive I would think.

Let's see. I was called "unpatriotic", "evil", "not a conservative", was told I was destroying the troops' morale, and some other things I have forgotten, because I didn't mindlessly support a terrible nomination.
But that's ok, apparently, because I *gasp* disagreed with The President.

That is all that a huge part of the base care about. Wealth redistribution is probably the biggest threat facing the country yet the Republican party embraces it fully.
Don't underestimate the appeal of fiscal conservatism. Arnold was even able to win California campaigning as fiscal conservative/social libertarian.
Also, foreign policy with the Republicans is a mixed bag. Leaving the southern border open like a sieve after 9/11 isn't a very wise move. Pledging billions to the UN that will only find it's way to corrupt african dictators isn't encouraging either.
Time for dinner, I'll leave the political schooling to one of the others for now.

What kills me is people wanted her to have a hearing! Hello?! If everyone is saying she's doing poorly, do you REALLY want her on national television, embarrassing herself and thus the President as well? She did the honorable thing by withdrawing. It would have been horrible for Miers to have been the one "defending" our beliefs... imho...
